GENERAL INFORMATION: • Never use the elevators during a fire. They can malfunction in several ways, entrapping people, or stopping on fire floors. • Close all doors whenever possible to limit the spread of fire or smoke. • Never shout “FIRE” or do anything to panic our guests. • If the GM, MOD, or Fire Department authorities determine evacuation of the Hotel is necessary, follow the EVACUATION / LOCKDOWN / CLOSURE guidelines in this manual. • All Associates not involved in fire brigade activities will assist guests to safety. SMOKE: Remember that SMOKE is a killer and will contain numerous toxic fumes and poisonous gasses. • Smoke rises. If you see smoke, stay low to the floor. • If you smell smoke, do not open the door to investigate unless the door is cool to the touch. A warm door likely indicates fire on the other side. Retreat to the nearest exit or call the operator if you are trapped. • In heavy smoke, covering your nose and mouth with any type of cloth will help. Damp is better but use any type of cloth available (towel, sleeve, bandana, handkerchief, scarf). THIRD SHIFT AND NIGHT AUDITOR (11 PM TO 7 AM): When the fire alarm sounds during overnight hours, all Associates are to report to the Front Desk Night Auditor for instructions and to assist. When the fire alarm sounds, all non-essential radio traffic shall cease. • Night Auditor will read the digital screen at the top of the fire panel to Security who will investigate and assess whether it is a false alarm or an actual fire. • If there is an actual fire, the Night Auditor is in charge until the Fire Department arrives. • Night Auditor will follow the MOD action plans, adjusted as appropriate for overnight activity and conditions.
