King's Business - 1950-12

Another day the Saviour was criticized for healing the withered hand of a man on the sabbath day. The crowds of peo ple gladly received Jesus’ teaching and praised Him for His miracles; but the religious leaders planned how they might destroy Him. Those who follow God’s Son today will be ridiculed and criticized frequently. Only much prayer and constant coming to God’s Word can give the courage that is needed to be a true follower of the Son of God. Jan. 28, 1951 JESUS TEACHES CONCERNING THE KINGDOM Mark 4:1, 2a, 26-34 Pointers on the Lesson The emphasis in this lesson is on Jesus the Teacher. The most important purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world was to be a Saviour. But He also had a very important teaching ministry. He was the matchless teacher. He made frequent use of parables in His teaching. Parables are illustrations of spiritual truths. By such means Jesus set forth the great facts concerning the kingdom o f God. The lesson today gives a few examples of His parabolic teaching. The Place Where He Taught 1, 2a “ He began again to teach by the sea side.” A vast multitude was present. Our Lord accommodated Himself to the situation by using a boat for a pulpit, the lake as a sounding board, and the sloping shore for the auditorium to care for His crowd. The method of His teach ing was parabolic. He had a twofold purpose in teaching by parables. “ He set forth many deep and important truths in this form in order to test the reality of His hearers’ interest. If truly concerned, they would seek to get the meaning of the story, and so would be come earnest inquirers. If indifferent, they would pay no further attention, and so would go on in their careless way, hardening their hearts against the truth” (Ironside’s Notes on Mark en loco). Compare vv. 10-12 and Matt. 13: 11-15. The Parable of Silent Growth vv. 26-29 The Lord here uses an illustration from the natural world to set forth the method of growth in the spiritual realm. Preaching or teaching the Word is sow ing the seed in the world. The seed has within it the power under the proper conditions to bring forth spiritual life and fruitage (v. 26). No man can ex plain the mystery of the life within the seed and how it is able to reproduce itself through growth. Neither is any one able to explain how God’s Word is able to bring forth new life within the soul. The New Birth and the develop ment it makes possible are beyond man’s comprehension—“ he knoweth not how” (v. 27) but he can experience the bless ing of these factors. (Cf. John 3:3-6.)
