LSFA Launches New Guide: A Cost-Effective Route to Net Zero
As the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard enters its early adoption phase and the Future Homes Standard moves closer to implementation, the construction industry faces increasing pressure to deliver measurable carbon reductions without compromising cost, safety or performance. To help designers, developers and specifiers across both the public and private sectors navigate this transition, the Light Steel Frame Association (LSFA) has launched its new guidance document – the Cost-Effective Route to Net Zero. The guide explores how light steel frame construction can support the industry’s journey to net zero through whole-life carbon reduction, circular construction principles and advances in low-carbon steel production. It provides practical guidance for project teams looking to deliver high-performance, future-ready buildings while The publication highlights the importance of considering carbon emissions across the entire lifecycle of a building – from material extraction and manufacture through construction, occupation, adaptation and eventual deconstruction. Light steel frame is uniquely positioned to support this approach. As one of the world’s most recyclable construction materials, steel can be reused or recycled indefinitely without any loss of structural performance. Today’s light steel frame systems already contain between 60% and 90% recycled steel, while the steel industry continues to accelerate its transition towards low-carbon production through Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology powered by renewable energy. The new Electric Arc Furnace at Port Talbot is expected to reduce on-site CO₂ emissions by up to 90%, marking a significant milestone in the UK’s transition to green steel – with production maintaining commercial viability. From Production to Deconstruction anticipated to commence around 2027. Ben Towe, Chair of the Light Steel Frame Association (LSFA), said: “Our aim is to equip construction professionals with the knowledge and confidence to specify
light steel frame systems as a credible net zero solution, demonstrating that high-performance, future-ready buildings can be delivered without a significant cost premium. Early collaboration with the right expertise can transform project outcomes, unlocking a more sustainable, safe and cost- effective pathway to net zero.” Delivering Sustainability Without Compromising Safety The guide also reinforces that achieving net zero must never come at the expense of building safety. As regulations continue to evolve, non-combustible structural solutions are becoming increasingly important. Light steel frame offers excellent fire performance, dimensional stability and durability, providing confidence for developers, insurers, regulators and building occupants alike. Ben Towe added: “The challenge facing the construction industry is significant. We must reduce embodied carbon, improve operational performance, extend building lifespans and embrace circular construction principles while continuing to deliver safe, high- quality buildings that remain commercially viable. For too long, the net zero conversation has focused almost exclusively on operational energy. While this remains vital, we now recognise that whole- life carbon must sit at the heart of every design decision. By considering structural solutions at the earliest stages of a project, we can unlock significant carbon, programme and cost efficiencies while future-proofing buildings for generations to come. FIS launches new Training Module to support changes in Welsh Building Regulation
FIS has launched a short, targeted e-learning module: The Building Safety Act Wales 2026 to help contractors, designers and specialists prepare for significant changes to building regulations in Wales coming into force on 1st July 2026. From that date, a new building safety regime will come into force in Wales, introducing fundamental changes to how building work is regulated, approved and enforced. While closely aligned with the principles of the Building Safety Act 2022 introduced in England, the Welsh system is not identical and will operate through different regulators, processes and documentation requirements. What is changing in Wales? Wales is introducing a dutyholderled regulatory framework that applies to all regulated building work, with additional and more stringent requirements for higherrisk buildings (HRBs). The system has strong parallels with the English regime, but there are important practical differences that contractors, designers and specialists need to understand. Key features of the Welsh regime include: • A dutyholder framework similar to England, applying to clients, designers, contractors, principal designers and principal contractors • Mandatory competence requirements for individuals and organisations carrying out design or building work • Replacement of the traditional “deposit of plans” system with a new applicationbased building control approval process • Strengthened enforcement powers, including compliance notices, stop notices and extended enforcement periods • A separate staged approval system for higherrisk buildings, administered through local authority building control rather than a Building Safety Regulator A significant difference from the English system is that Wales has not created a standalone Building Safety Regulator. Higherrisk buildings and enforcement remain within the jurisdiction of local authority building control, with different approval routes, statutory declarations and appeal mechanisms.
The Welsh regime also defines higherrisk buildings more broadly, capturing buildings with at least one residential unit as well as hospitals and care homes with overnight stays. What the FIS Wales 2026 module covers The new FIS training module is targeted at those who have already completed the Introduction to the Building Safety Act and now need to understand how the Welsh system works in practice. It provides: • A clear explanation of how the Welsh building safety regime has evolved • An overview of the dutyholder and competence requirements applying from July 2026 • Practical guidance on the new building control approval process • Detailed insight into higherrisk building procedures, staged approvals and prescribed information • Clarity on enforcement powers and what they mean in practice • A plainEnglish explanation of transitional arrangements for projects already underway Preparing for July 2026 Transitional provisions mean that some projects already in the system before 1st July 2026 will continue under the current arrangements. However, any project that has not deposited full plans or secured acceptance of an initial notice by that date will need to comply with the new Welsh regime from the outset. With increased emphasis on competence, accountability and documented compliance, now is the right time for organisations to ensure their teams understand how the Welsh system operates. Delivering PAS 24 Compliance with UAP Hardware: TS008 Letterplates, Fullex Locks and Beyond
In today’s construction landscape, compliance with PAS 24 is no longer optional; it is essential. Developed as a benchmark for enhanced security performance, PAS 24 provides a rigorous testing method to ensure that doorsets can withstand opportunistic and forced-entry attempts commonly encountered in the UK. However, one of the most important, and often misunderstood, aspects of PAS 24 is that it tests the entire doorset as a complete system, not just individual components. This means that every element, from the locking mechanism to the letterplate, plays a critical role in achieving compliance. UAP’s integrated approach to hardware

Made For Trade Announces Major Investment
New 100,496 sq ft Northampton production, distribution and showroom facility. Made for Trade has announced a major expansion of its UK operations with the addition of Dimensions House, a 110,496 sq ft facility in Northampton that will become a key production, distribution and showroom site for the business. The site investment is complemented by another significant investment in Schirmer machinery to improve the quality of already industry leading production. The new premises will support Made for Trade’s continued growth by increasing production capacity, improving distribution efficiency and strengthening service levels for customers across the UK. Dimensions House has been selected as a strategically important location for the business. With a significant proportion of Made for Trade’s customer base located outside its North East manufacturing base, the Northampton site will allow the company to operate a more efficient national distribution model, with larger trunking runs into the hub and smaller, more frequent delivery routes from the site. This hub-and-spoke approach will improve delivery efficiency, reduce pressure on existing operations and support a faster, more responsive service for trade customers. Midlands Showroom The facility will also include a dedicated showroom, which will be used to onboard new accounts and introduce customers to the company’s expanding product range. The showroom will also be available for Made for Trade customers to use when presenting Korniche products to their own end users, giving trade partners a professional environment in which to demonstrate the quality, design and performance of the range. Expanded Aluminium Range Dimensions House will play a central role in Made for Trade’s future product strategy. The site is planned to become the production facility for the upcoming Korniche Window, an all-aluminium product designed to redefine the UK aluminium window sector through innovation, installation simplicity, strong thermal performance, competitive pricing,
high stock availability and short lead times. The Korniche Window will further expand the Made for Trade product range and support the company’s ambition to offer trade customers a one-supplier solution across aluminium glazing products. By broadening the range, Made for Trade aims to help customers simplify purchasing, improve consistency and access more of the products they need from a single trusted supplier. The investment follows a series of recent additions to the Korniche range. The company’s Internal Glass Partition system is now available in custom colours at highly competitive prices. A new entry door based around the award winning Korniche bi-folding door system will be launching in August. Aluminium finishing trims are now available as perfect colour matches to ensure the best finish for installations.
