RDHS track coach eyes EOSSAA
Rockland District High School’s track- and-field coach Karen Kryviak anticipates she will have a good-sized contingent to take to the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) finals after this Tuesday’s Prescott-Russell regionals at the Terry Fox Field by Mooney’s Bay in Ottawa. The top four athletes in each event qualify for EOSSAA. “I think they (RDHS team) should all
make it,” Kryviak said Monday. “It’s a good team. We’ve got a nice mix this year of kids in just about every event.” Part of the reason for Kryviak’s confi- dence is all the meets RDHS has entered this season prior to the PR regionals. Almost all the other schools in the region have not attended any actual meets while RDHS has sent its athletes to two of the Dome Series in Orléans along with the Ottawa University High School Invitational at the Terry Fox Field in Ottawa. Last Friday, RDHS was back inOttawa for the National Capital meet, though. Kryviak noted it was a smaller than usual team because most of her junior boys were away at the Earl of March Spring Tune-Up rugby tournament. Kryviak is still satisfied with the results of the National Capital meet, which includes top-three finishes for two Rockland students. Alexa Van Avery landed second in the shot put while Gavin Westbrook breezed to a third-place finish in the 800-metre. Van Avery was satisfied with her 9.2-metre effort, noting it was a new personal best throw for her. “I did a little better than I thought I was going to,” she said. Westbrook was more critical of his per- formance though he expressed overall satis- faction. “I didn’t have a very good run,” he said, adding that the 2:17.81-minute time is still a few seconds below his own personal best. “The heat took it out of me, definitely. But I was happy with my placing.”
