A Tribute to My Father A Man Whose Engine Never Stops Running

Last issue, I shared some stories about the positive impact my mother and stepmother have had on my life. With Father’s Day coming up in June, I figured I would devote a little time to talking about my father, Warren Stevenson. He was, and still is, an amazing man, and I’ve learned a lot from him over the years. Hard work and dedication aren’t just values he talks about; he lives them every day of his life.

barefoot around the school playground whenever he had the chance. Eventually, he graduated to tennis shoes and put even more miles on his feet. He’s now completed a bunch of marathons. He even came with me when I ran the Top of Utah Marathon in 2011, though he did not run himself. I was sucking wind the entire time, but the way he pushed me through the race was pretty similar to the way he encouraged me on those Sunday morning paper routes.

Though my dad graduated college and intended to be a teacher, he spent most of his life as a hard laborer. He worked long hours in grueling conditions, but I never once heard him complain. After years of working at his job, he moved to Colorado to start his own business. I learned a lot about running a practice from observing the tireless effort my dad put into his work.

Now that I’m a father myself, I try to emulate the behavior my dad demonstrated. I teach my children the importance of hard work and let them know that if they’re determined enough, they can succeed in whatever career they choose to pursue. I am so grateful for everything my dad taught me, and it means a lot to me that we still communicate nearly every week. Before I go this month, I want to remind everyone that we have our annual patient appreciation event coming up in August. Every year, we offer our patients and their families a night at the drive-in. We’ll watch a movie together (I don’t know what will be showing just yet) and snack on a soda and popcorn. Tickets are available at the office, so stop in and schedule a cleaning. The event is a way for us to say thank you to our wonderful patients for contributing so much to Trailridge Family Dental. I also want to say thanks to my father for always being there for me throughout the years.

Even when my dad was super busy, he never failed to make time for me. My first job was delivering papers on Sunday mornings, and Dad was always there to drive me. Sometimes I wasn’t in the cheeriest of moods getting up at the crack of dawn on a Sunday morning, but my dad never failed to give me a reason to smile as we drove around the neighborhood doing deliveries. I don’t think I understood at the time how special his demeanor toward work was, but I certainly realize it now.

– Dr. Stevenson

Another manifestation of my dad’s dedication was the passion he put toward one of his favorite hobbies: running. As a kid, he ran

The Science Behind Sharing Make It AboutThem, NotYou! W hen someone tells you about their business, an event they’re

interested in reading or sharing content that connects to their own experiences. According to Falk, “They share things that might improve their relationships, make them look smart or empathic, or cast them in a positive light.” Whether you share information through word of mouth, social media, or email, this makes complete sense. We share information that resonates with us because it connects to our emotions.

Small-business owners communicate with customers, parents try to get through to teenagers, grandparents try to relate to their grandkids, journalists communicate with readers, doctors communicate with patients, etc. The moral of the story is this: If you have information you want shared, make the people you are talking to feel good about themselves when they pass it on.

attending, or their friend’s lost dog, what makes you pass that information along to someone else? According to Live Science, you share the information because it makes you look good, not them. A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania examined the brain activity of 80 college students while they read 80 titles and abstracts from the New York Times’ health section. These articles had been shared a total of 120,000 times via Facebook, Twitter, and email by real readers, according to the New York Times. Over the course of the study, researchers noticed a specific brain activity pattern that was linked to the students sharing the articles in the real world. Emily Falk, the study’s senior author and the director of Penn’s Communication Neuroscience Lab, found that people are

These findings are not only pertinent to Falk, who hopes this information will help the science community share health behavior changes, but also to any person who has a message to share. And we all have information to share.

Summer Reading Programs for Kids Avoid the Summer Slide

Having the kids home from school can be awesome, but how do you keep them busy

But libraries aren’t the only places that reward summer reading. National businesses also get in on the fun. Barnes & Noble will give a free book to any child who completes their summer reading triathlon journal (barnesandnoble.com/summerreading). Chuck E. Cheese will give any child 10 free tokens if they read every day and record their progress on their reading calendar (chuckecheese.com). Pizza Hut will also reward young readers for filling out a passport (bookitprogram.com), and there are other companies that offer incentives. Remember, reading is about more than just learning. It’s also about keeping minds active to fight the “summer slide” that educators dread every new school year. If you want your kids to have fun, stay sharp, and win cool prizes, get them involved in summer reading!

and mentally engaged? You might find yourself eyeing expensive summer camps or wondering about private tutors. But that’s not necessary. Instead, check out some of these great summer reading rewards programs. All these programs are free, they’ll get your kids reading, and they’ll give you some time to yourself to boot! The local library is the best place to start. Most city libraries have great summer reading programs that will reward kids for their hard work with prizes, awards, and even free books. Libraries are also great places to get suggestions for kids, and they offer fun activities during the day and night that will foster a love of learning and reading — and lead to more ideas on what to read!

Are Veneers Right for You?

I n recent years, dental veneers — the thin, custom-made, porcelain shells used to cover the front surfaces of teeth — have become a popular dental procedure for people of all ages. When done correctly, veneers can quickly correct chipped, rotated, or discolored teeth.

your facial symmetry and style. Veneers are low maintenance. However, porcelain veneers should be brushed and flossed the same way you treat your natural teeth. It’s also important to remember to visit your dentist for professional polishing procedures with a special, non-abrasive paste.

Why would I get veneers?

I don’t know if veneers would fit my lifestyle.

Veneers can be placed in only two visits to the dentist! Also, it’s easy to change the color of your teeth with veneers, since porcelain has the real look of teeth and will not stain. Veneers add to the strength of your natural teeth by capping and protecting them. Also, veneers can be customized to fit

If you want veneers, there are certain precautions you can take in order to preserve the integrity of the procedure. Those who suffer from teeth grinding can purchase special night guards that help protect veneers from damage. It is also recommended that you wear a mouthguard when playing sports, as the veneers can break off like, just like natural teeth.

Remember ...

Alas, a stable bite may make or break — literally — a successful veneer case. When you ask your dentist about veneers, they will evaluate your bite before deciding if they are a viable option for you. But the most important thing to remember about veneers is that the procedure is often permanent. Sometimes, natural teeth need to be shaved in order for a dentist to place veneers; if so, they are irreversible. Talk to your dentist if you think veneers are for you!
