Hammond soccer duo strikes out for Europe

The Rockland Nationals went fishing for a win in La Pêche over the weekend and came back with a good-size score for the night.Then the Cumberland Bandits stole the game on Sunday. Saturday night was a good night for Rockland at le Complexe sportif de la Pêche. The Nats slammed l’Académie Jr. Outaouais 6-1 by the end of the third period. Sunday afternoon, at home at the Cla- rence-Rockland Arena, the Nats had the Cumberland Bandits over for their latest set-to in the National Capital Junior Hockey League season schedule. The Bandits slip- ped away with a 5-4 win over the Nats with solo goals from Gabriel Cuillerier, Patrick Daoust, Martin Forget, BrodyMcLeod, and Nigel Roy. Assisting on the goals were Cuille- rier, McLeod, LukeWitzel, Nicholas Bedard, Aiden Cannell, and Alex Labrecque. Scoring solo points for Rockland were Jeff Brett, Benoît Brunet, Miguel Crispin, and Nickolas Spirito. Assists came fromBrunet, Crispin, Spirito, and Vincent Martel. Minding the net for Rockland was Jonathan Cameron while Stéphane Dumoulin guarded the goal for Cumberland. The January schedule quiets down a bit for the Nats with their last two games at home Sunday afternoons against l’Académie Outaouais on Jan. 24 and the Gatineau-Hull Volant on Jan. 31. It is the dream of the lifetime for two soc- cer-loving students at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic High School in Hammond. Jesse Norton and LoganMacDonald are in line to play for Canada at an internatio- nal varsity soccer tournament in the Czech Republic this spring. “We’re super excited,” said MacDonald, adding that their one regret is they won’t be able to play for their home school at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletics Associations championships in that month as well. “But we’re confident that we (SFX) can do it again next year,” added Norton. For the past fewmonths, the Hammond duo have been part of the roster for the Cum- berland Cobras Academy soccer club. The club was tapped to be Canada’s represen- tative at a Select youth soccer tournament in the Czech Republic in May. The Cobras coaches are from the Czech Republic and were very impressed at the skills and passion that MacDonald and Norton displayed for the game in the few months that they have been on the Cumberland bench. That is how the Hammond duo got tapped for the Cobras lineup for the Europe trip. Les Castors de Clarence ont perdu deux de leurs trois derniersmatchs, dont le plus récent contre les Hawks de Winchester. Zachary Fournier, aidé de Stéphane Routhier et de Calvin Heffler, est à l’origine du premier but marqué par les Castors, en première période. Olivier Brunet, avec les passes de Cullen Vanstrien et de Pier-Olivier Fournier, a permis à son équipe de prendre une avance de deux points face àWinchester, avant que celle-ci ne réduise l’écart à un point, en fin de deuxième période. L’équipe locale amené la partie jusqu’en début de troisième période, où ils ont vu les Hawks reprendre de la force. Ces derniers ont compté trois buts, leur permettant de prendre une avance de deux points en der- nière période. Olivier Brunet a marqué le dernier but des Castors, aidé de Tyler Pancel et Karl Larivière. Ce point n’aura cependant pas suffit à l’équipe pour repartir avec la victoire. Lematch du 15 janvier dernier s’est aussi terminé par une défaite pour les Castors, qui ont perdu la partie 4 à 8 face aux Jets de Metcalfe. Les Jets ont mis la rondelle cinq fois dans le filet en première période, avant que les Castors ne se décident et marquent leur premier point en début de seconde période. Karl Larivière, aidé de Tyler Pancel, est celui qui a ouvert la marque pour les Castors. Stéphane Routhier, aidé de Pier-Olivier Four- nier et de Justin Aubry, Cameron Gallant, avec la passe de Mathieu Quenneville, et Pancel, avec l’aide de Zachary Fournier et Routhier, ont marqué les trois autres buts de VÉRONIQUE CHARRON veronique.charron@eap.on.ca

Les Castors s’inclinent face aux Hawks

Ils ont dominé tout au long du match et ont terminé la partie 6 à 0. Mathieu Quenneville (Pancel), Olivier Brunet (Jordan Baptiste et Vanstrien) et Pancel, ont marqué les trois premiers buts de l’équipe en première période. Le seul point compté en seconde période a été fait en avantage numérique par Larivière. Il a
été aidé de Vanstrien et de Brunet. Baptiste (Zacharie Car) et Brunet (Baptiste, Zacharie Car) ont marqué les deux derniers points de la partie, signant par le fait même une victoire écrasante pour leur équipe. Une semaine chargée attend les Castors, eux qui affronteront d’abord les Vikings de Casselman, le 21 janvier, au Complexe J.R. Brisson, à Casselman. Le 23 janvier, ils se dé- placeront vers Char-Lan où ils feront face aux Rebels, avant de revenir à Clarence Creek, le 24 janvier, où ils joueront contre les Tikis de Brockville.
