NEWYEAR, NEWJOINTS?

What to Consider Before Joint Replacement Surgery

Adapting to a new joint will take some time, so it’s important to prepare before surgery. You should learn how to correctly use any mobility aids; adjust to changes in lifestyle, nutrition, and supplementation; and prepare your home environment so moving will be as easy as possible after surgery. After the joint is replaced, most patients believe they will be able to jump right back into their old lifestyle pain-free. This is not the case, and attempting to do so can be dangerous. First, your body needs time to recover from the trauma of surgery. A few days in the hospital are necessary so your doctor can monitor the beginning of your recovery. Additionally, just like with any prosthesis, you will need to learn how to use this part of your body again. The best way to teach your new joint to move normally is through physical therapy. Rebuilding your strength and learning how to move again is a slow and exhausting process, mentally and physically. Having the support and guidance of a physical therapist can mean the difference between making a full recovery and suffering from a damaged prosthetic after surgery. If living a pain-free life is part of your New Year’s resolution, give Horizon PT a call at 810-620-8042. Make sure you have the right team on your side after joint replacement surgery.

Around 1 million patients will undergo joint replacement surgery in 2019.

After years of joint pain brought on by injury, arthritis, or the wear and tear of life, these patients will finally decide enough is enough! Will you be one of them?

When a joint wears away, inflammation, pain, swelling, and stiffness follow. If left unchecked, these damaged joints can restrict blood flow to certain areas of the body, leaving the surrounding bones unable to repair themselves. Total knee arthroplasty is one of the most common and costly surgical procedures, but after living in pain for years, many patients may also need hip, shoulder, wrist, ankle, and elbow replacements. Expensive joint replacement surgery does not have to be the first option to live pain-free in the new year. Many doctors will start by prescribing lifestyle changes and specialized exercise programs under the supervision of a physical therapist. Exercises that improve flexibility and maintain mobility can also help relieve pain. Conservative measures should always be the first line of defense, but when surgery is necessary, there are a few things to keep in mind.
