HOW WE BUI LD OUR FUTURE Looking Forward January is a time for me to look to the future and think about where I want to go during the new year. My goals for 2019 are to expand Horizon PT and spend more time with my family. Since I’m a business owner and a father, these goals seem obvious, but I have put a great deal of thought into the best ways to realize them. To start, I want to hire a new physical therapist and patient care coordinator by July. I’ve given myself plenty of time to achieve this goal because it’s not something I want to rush. I owe it to my patients and my company to hire good, quality employees. It’s not enough to just have the technical skills to do the job; I’m also looking for people who genuinely want to help others. You can teach someone skills, but you can’t make them a good person. When I interview potential new hires, I work to find people who will make the best teammembers. In my experience, the best teammembers click with the rest of the staff, have our patients’ best interests at heart, and help us grow in the direction we want to go. These are qualities you can only find when you sit down and talk to someone. Our hiring process can take a while because I want to make sure the person sitting in front of me is going to help my patients get better. Shifting to my personal life, I want to spend quality time with my family this year. I would love to take a family vacation again. Last year, we went to Cancun on an all-inclusive trip, and it was the best time. We got to kick back, enjoy the nice weather, and not think about all the little stressors life throws at us. My eldest son, Jerome, had a ball. He loved playing on the beach and going down the waterslide. My favorite part of the trip was watching him have fun. The reason I work so hard is so that my family doesn’t have to stress and can enjoy simple pleasures like the ones we experienced in Mexico. It felt good to see my son having fun, and I remembered how important it is to find time to be present with myself and my family. It helps clear my mind, and when I go back to the “real world,” I find this extra energy I didn’t have before. Now that our youngest son is here, I would love to take another family trip. I don’t know where we’ll go, but it will be somewhere warm by the ocean.

All that said, I’m not just thinking about what I want to achieve this time of year. I also have the privilege of hearing my patients’ New Year’s resolutions. Health is on everyone’s mind, and a lot of patients come to physical therapy to get in shape or overcome pain they’ve struggled with for years. If you have something specific you want to accomplish this year, I’d love to hear about it! And if you know a friend or a family member who could use our help to achieve their goals, please send them our way! I want to help more people and build a practice where everyone who comes through our doors fulfills their goals.
Thank you to all my patients who supported me in 2018 and are continuing their support in 2019. Happy New Year!
