July 15, 1951 HOMES THAT DO NOT FALL

there is provision for the divorce of mar ried persons for one cause (v. 9), though without the privilege of remarriage of either party while the other is living. The whole matter may be summed up in our Lord’s words in Mark 10:11, 12; “Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her; and if she herself shall put away her husband, and marry another, she committeth adultery” (R.V.). The Essential Factor 1 Cor. 13:4-7 A successful home must be built on love—not a sentimental love, but the kind that Paul describes in the wonder ful passage before us. Matt. 19:3-9; 1 Cor. 13:4-7 Pointers on the Lesson

This is a day when more heed needs to be taken to the Word of God in the matter of building successful home life. The teachings of Jesus on the founda tion and sanctity of marriage are basic to the establishment of homes that will stand against the storms of divorce, loose morals and modern secularism. The principle of love that is stressed in the second portion of today’s lesson is the only solution to the many problems that confront family life in these care less days. Let us see what God has to say about these vital matters. The Establishment of Marriage Matt. 19:3-6 This section makes it clear that God alone is responsible for the establish ment of the institution of marriage. This ought to make a difference in the treatment accorded to it. In the passage the Pharisees are again at the business of seeking to en trap Jesus. Apparently there was a divi sion at this time with respect to the mat ter of divorce. There was a group which insisted upon the husband’s right to divorce his wife whenever he might see fit to do so; others held to a stricter view of the subject. Both sought to in terpret the law of Moses. Whatever answer Jesus gave would not please them. Their purpose was not to receive the truth. Nevertheless Jesus presented them with a basic truth, namely, that in the plan of God the marriage tie is an indissoluble union—“ one flesh”—and such a union that forbids severance— “what God therefore hath joined to gether, let not man put asunder.” Man should think no more of severing this union than he would think of cutting his body if he discovered a weakness in it that brought discomfort. Marriage was established by God. Let man beware of trifling with it! The Restriction of Divorce Matt. 19:7-9 Not satisfied with Jesus’ words, the Pharisees appealed to Moses. They say, “ Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorcement, and to put her away?” As a matter of fact, Moses did not command any such thing. He per mitted it, in order to suppress a flagrant evil. (See Deut. 24:1-4.) Then Jesus de clared that it was because of the hard ness of men’s hearts that Moses per mitted a relaxation of the high ideal that God established in the beginning. He makes it perfectly clear that sin alone is responsible for the break-up of marriage between living persons. More over, we are not living under the Mosaic dispensation at the present time and need to act according to the first princi ples which God laid down at the begin ning. In the New Testament, however,
