C-R firefighters support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

School for sale in Plantagenet

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is putting the Plantagenet Public School buildings and grounds up for sale. The UCDSB closed the elementary school as of September this year following results of region-wide study to determine what facilities are now surplus to the district’s needs given the current decline in overall student population for the UCDSB. Students who attended Plantagenet Public School are now relocated to Rockland Public School, which is part of the same UCDSB catchment area. —photo Gregg Chamberlain

Alcohol-related incident Within the last week, Russell County OPP ar- rested and charged a male and a female in relation to impaired driving. Ashley Ann Cole, aged 28 of Wendover, and Roberto Di Bari, aged 38 of Beaconfield QC. They will attend Provin- cial Court of Justice in L’Orignal for their first appearance in October 2017. Drivers charged with excess blood alcohol are subject to an automatic 90-day driver’s license suspension and their vehicles are impounded for seven days. – Vicky Charbonneau More paramedics The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council approved a resolution during its Sept. 27 session for the counties to add two more paramedic positions to the ambulance services’ roster. The decision is due to an increase in the number of critical emer- gency callouts. The roster addition will be included in the 2018 budget draft. – Gregg Chamberlain Firefighters will be wearing the pink epaulettes throughout the entire month of October for Breast Cancer AwarenessMonth. Once all the donations are collected at the end of the month, the fire department is planning to have a group picture taken and make a cheque presentation to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Members of the Clarence-Rockland Fire Department are expressing their support for breast cancer research by wearing pink epaulettes during October, the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Started by members of the Clarence- Rockland Professional Fire Fighters Asso- ciation, the initiative is being coordinated by members of the fire department, who can opt tomake a donation to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and then wear their pink epaulettes to demonstrate their support. “There has been a long-standing connec- tion between firefighters and risk of can- cer, and many fire departments across the country have taken certain initiatives to show their ongoing support and increase aware- ness for breast cancer awareness,” said fire chief BrianWilson. This is a great voluntary initiative from our members to support a great cause. Some organizations have ’ca- sual Friday’ to raise money for charities. Because we need to be in uniform, I felt this was a good way to still show support and help raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.”
