— capture d’écran RIVER FESTIVAL EXPANSION PLANNED

Plans are underway to expand Prescott- Russell’s successful Ottawa River Fest and make it a festival that celebrates the region’s entire aquatic heritage. The United Counties of Prescott and Russell’s economic development and tourism department (UCPR) propose to take the existing river festival project and make it something that all of Prescott-Russell’s eight municipalities can share in and celebrate. Carole Lavigne, UCPR economic development and tourism director, explained during a February 22 interview that expansion of the Ottawa River Festival to include all of the major rivers in Prescott-Russell is the next logical step. “When you start creating something to make people aware,” she said, “the Ottawa River Festival was merged with our local Canada Day events. Now, we realize that we don’t advertise all of our rivers enough. This is all part of our heritage.” An expanded River Festival project would still highlight the Ottawa River and its contribution to Prescott-Russell’s history and its recreation opportunities. But other waterways, like the South Nation River and the Castor River, would also become part of the celebration and provide Russell Township, The Nation Municipality, and the Village of Casselman with an opportunity to take part with their own river heritage festival events. “So, what we’re doing now is asking all the other municipalities to send us proposals for projects or activities,” Lavigne said. “We want to showcase our rivers.” She noted that the expanded Prescott- Russell River Festival project would be more flexible for scheduling. Not all festival events in all the eight municipalities would have to take place in July, as it was traditional

Events could be scheduled for summer or winter or other times of the year. This year’s UCPR budget has the original $32,000 allocation for the Ottawa River Festival. Lavigne hopes to see the expanded River Festival project launch this year, with the pre-approved budget funds going towards promotion of river theme activities in all eight municipalities. She expressed optimism about the expanded river festival’s tourism potential for the region. “Some of the municipalities have (river theme) activities,” she said. “They just may not be very well-known.”
