Physical activity will help you start the New Year in good shape and you’ll look better as well!

After the copious meals and late nights of the holidays it can be pretty hard to re- turn to a healthy lifestyle. Luckily, by resu- ming healthy eating habits and some form of regular physical exercise we can repair the damage to our bodies. The best way to get started is by eating lots of vegetable soups that are rich in vita- mins and avoiding high-fat foods such as sauces, fried foods, and desserts. Taking the time to sit down and eat slowly creates a low-stress mealtime that rewards the ap- petite and is good for digestion. It will also allow you to better control the amount of food you consume. Catching up on your sleep is also crucial to staying in shape! Daily exercise Doing some form of exercise on a daily basis will also help you to regain your vita- lity and boost your mood. It will also pro-

tect your cardiovascular system, preserve bone density, improve brain function, and limit weight gain. Start moving by choosing the stairs instead of the elevator, parking the car a block from work, or dancing for 20 minutes to music you love. Gradually work up to daily walking, hiking, or swimming. Pleasure To stay motivated, it is recommended that beginners start with short 15-minute sessions, once or twice a week, and gra- dually increase the frequency to three 30-minute sessions per week. Don’t forget that pleasure is an important factor in kee- ping new resolutions. Be sure to warm up before starting any physical activity and avoid pushing yourself if you feel any pain. So, on your mark, get set, go!
