Home Sweet Home
Barkitecture: When Your Home Is Designed for the Dog Move over, traditional home upgrades – ‘barkitecture’ is giving our four-legged family members a seat at the design table. The term refers to home features and renovations created specifically with pets in mind, and it’s becoming increasingly popular as homeowners look for ways to make their spaces more pet-friendly. One of the simplest barkitecture upgrades is a built-in feeding station. Instead of bowls taking up valuable floor space, homeowners can create a designated nook with food and water bowls tucked neatly into cabinetry or a kitchen island. Pull-out drawers can also provide convenient storage for food, treats, leashes, and toys. For dogs who love spending time outdoors, a dedicated pet door can make life easier. Modern options range from simple doors to electronic models that allow access only to a specific pet via their dog collar. Another popular idea is creating a pet washing station. A walk-in shower or low, tiled wash area can make bath time considerably easier and less messy. Adding a handheld sprayer, storage for grooming supplies, and
a nonslip surface can turn an ordinary space into a practical pet spa. Barkitecture can also be as simple as choosing the right materials. Durable flooring, washable fabrics, stain-resistant upholstery, and easy-to-clean rugs can help a home stand up to muddy paws, shedding, and the occasional accident. Built-in beds or cozy window nooks can give pets their own comfortable retreat without sacrificing valuable living space. Fenced dog runs, shaded play areas, and pet-friendly landscaping can transform outdoor spaces into safe places to explore. In the desert Southwest, selecting non-toxic plants and providing plenty of shade and fresh water are especially important. The best part of barkitecture? It doesn’t have to mean a major renovation. Even a dedicated toy drawer, built-in crate space, or washable corner can make everyday life easier for both pets and their people. After all, if pets are part of the family, why shouldn’t the home be designed with them in mind?
