A non-technical course designed exclusively for non-music majors to develop a more sympathetic and enjoyable ac­ quaintance with musical art. No previous ability in the read­ ing of music necessary. Includes a brief survey of music history with numerous musical illustrations, various types of music, basic principles of music form, methods of listen­ ing, characteristics of various instruments, themes of well­ known works . An historical survey of music literature with emphasis on comparative analysis of musical styles, forms and perform­ ance media from the Renaissance to the present. Either semester. Prerequisite: Limited ability in the reading of music. The history of music of Pre-Christian, Middle Ages, Renais­ sance, and early Baroque periods (Pre-Christian age through 17th century) . Prerequisite: 105.
