Mapping Africa’s Ecosystem: 41 Countries, 5,000+ Stakeholders

The UNDP timbuktoo Stakeholder Mapping Project - conducted in partnership with AfriLabs - set out to build a systematic, evidence-based picture of Africa’s innovation landscape. Eight ecosystem experts led research design, validation, and analysis across 41 countries spanning all five African regions. Data collection included surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. Over 500 participants engaged directly. More than 5,000 stakeholders were identified - hubs, service providers, investors, academic partners, and policy actors.

The result is the most comprehensive evidence base Africa’s innovation ecosystem has ever had. It identifies gaps in capital, infrastructure, and support services. It maps where ecosystems are strong and where they are fragile. And it gives AfriLabs, UNDP timbuktoo, and their partners a shared foundation from which to design more targeted, and more effective interventions across the continent.

Building the African innovation future we want will take more than ideas. It will take courage, collaboration, and a shared commitment to act... Individually we are powerful, but together we are earthshattering, history making, transformative.” Anna Ekeledo, Executive Director, AfriLabs
