After more than three decades with Pebble Beach Company — and over 15 years as President of the Foundation — we extend our heartfelt thanks and celebrate Susan Merfeld on her retirement. Her legacy of service and leadership has left a lasting impact on the Monterey County region. Susan began her career with Pebble Beach Company in 1989 as Vice President of Human Resources. Her leadership helped shape a strong, community-minded culture across the organization. As President of the Foundation, Susan guided remarkable growth: Annual granting increased from $213,000 in 2009 to over $2 million in 2024. She also expanded the employee scholarship program's annual awards from $60,000 in 2009 to $142,000 in 2024. Susan’s passion for education and early childhood development has touched thousands of young lives. She championed company giving initiatives and served on the Monterey Peninsula Foundation Grant Committee and with the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Susan will be remembered for fostering generosity and meaningful work, and we wish her all the best in this next chapter!

Dear Friends, This year’s annual report marks a special milestone: Our 50th anniversary of giving. As we celebrate this incredible moment, we are filled with gratitude for the impact Pebble Beach Company Foundation has made in the lives of young people across Monterey County. Since our very first $3,000 grant in 1976, your generosity has helped us invest in the potential of every young life, ensuring students have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive. What started as a modest initiative grew into over $1 million in annual support by 2017 – and total giving of an incredible $19.2 million by the end of 2024 – an inspiring legacy built by your continued belief in education and opportunity. Today’s students face evolving challenges. Many are still recovering academically and emotionally from the pandemic, while also confronting food insecurity, mental health struggles, and barriers to technology. Thanks to your ongoing support, we are able to respond with both agility and compassion. Our close relationships with community partners help us stay informed and responsive to emerging needs. In the past year alone, we’ve partnered with more than 115 local nonprofits, supporting programs that provide early childhood care, mental health services, youth development, college and career readiness, and much more. These efforts are helping students gain confidence, resilience, and the tools they need to shape their own bright futures. As we look back on five decades of impact, our mission remains clear: to invest in youth today for a promising tomorrow. Thank you for being a vital part of this journey.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Driving Philanthropy Forward
S ince 1950, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has raised over $41 million for charity — most of which goes to help children in our community through more than 115 organizations supported by Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Much of this success is due to the loyal, passionate and generous entrants who share their prized automobiles on the 18th fairway each year. While many visit Pebble Beach only once a year — on the third Sunday in August — their generosity continues to make a lasting impact in our community year-round. Among the most generous of these benefactors is esteemed collector and longtime friend of the Concours, Jim Patterson.
Since debuting a car at Pebble Beach in 2001, Patterson has shared 17 additional cars from his collection, three of which have gone on to win Best of Show. Over two decades, he and his late wife Dot also contributed $320,000 to Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Then in 2023, following his third Best of Show win, Patterson made an extraordinary pledge: He committed his 1939 Delage D6-3L Grand Prix to Pebble Beach Company Foundation.
Although several individuals and manufacturers have donated cars to charity in connection with the Pebble Beach Concours, through auctions or opportunity drawings, Patterson’s forward-thinking gesture marks a historic first — his Delage is the first vehicle ever donated directly to Pebble Beach Company Foundation.
Now on display at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California, the Delage is available for enthusiasts to enjoy before it crosses the auction block at a future Gooding Christie’s sale leading into the Pebble Beach Concours. This donation is significant not just in sum, but because the Delage will eventually be entrusted to a new steward and every dollar from its sale will be immediately reinvested in the community. This contribution, facilitated by Pebble Beach Company Foundation, will go directly to more than 115 vetted charitable programs, ensuring a real, measurable and immediate impact on those that need it most. Patterson’s remarkable gift sets a powerful precedent, encouraging fellow collectors to consider how the full value of their automobiles can make a lasting difference. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance not only celebrates the automobile, but also the generous spirit of those who use these magnificent machines to drive philanthropy forward.

Pebble Beach Hill & Heumann Scholars Where Are They Now?
McPherson Class of 2011: Kalila Haddad
K alila Haddad, a 2011 recipient of the Pebble Beach Phil Hill Scholarship, has carved out a unique role in the automotive world as the lead archivist for the prestigious Ralph Lauren car collection. Growing up in a classic car-loving family in Kansas City, Haddad was fascinated by both vintage vehicles and history from a young age. Her early pursuits ranged from pinstriping at car shows to studying industrial welding and automotive technology. But it wasn’t until she arrived at McPherson College — home to the nation’s only four-year automotive restoration degree — that she found a place where her wide-ranging interests could truly come together.
A pivotal summer internship at The Revs Institute sparked her passion for archival research and automotive documentation. From there, her career evolved rapidly: First cataloging an extensive private collection on California’s Central Coast, then accepting a cross-country move to manage Ralph Lauren’s internationally celebrated fleet. Today, Haddad oversees a growing archive of vehicle history files, documents restoration efforts, and works closely with historians, museums, and former owners to fill in historical gaps. She treats each vehicle as a living artifact, where every past owner, event or modification contributes to the car’s ongoing story. Her attention to detail and deep respect for authenticity ensure these stories are preserved for generations to come. Haddad’s work goes far beyond paperwork — it’s about safeguarding the legacies that define automotive culture. Her journey highlights the impact that programs like those at McPherson College and support from Pebble Beach Company Foundation have on empowering students to find their voice — and their place — in a competitive, tradition-rich industry. McPherson Class of 2022: Victoria Bruno V ictoria Bruno received the Jules “J.” & Sally Heumann Scholarship from Pebble Beach Company Foundation in 2022. A standout student in McPherson College’s renowned Automotive Restoration Program, she carried a double courseload, maintained a 4.0 GPA, and interned at elite restoration shops. Her goal was clear: To become a highly regarded vintage Ferrari mechanic in the US.
Fast forward to today, and Bruno is not just chasing that dream — she’s living it. Now based in Berkeley, California, she works as a Ferrari mechanic at Patrick Ottis Co., one of the most respected Ferrari restoration shops in the world. Her days are filled with intricate belt services, engine teardowns on rare classics and meticulous attention to the kind of details that elevate restorations to “Pebble standard.” Her road to Ottis’s shop began with a shop visit on the way to her first Pebble Beach Concours, where she not only helped present the first McPherson student-restored car to be accepted — a 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Cabriolet that placed second in class — but also shadow- judged in the Ferrari GT class. It was during that weekend that she met Patrick Ottis. Today, Bruno is immersed in the rhythm of high-level restoration at Patrick Ottis Co. while also growing her influence in the wider automotive community. Known online as “MotoriBruno,” she shares her day-to-day life in the shop with thousands of followers across social media platforms, inspiring a new generation of car lovers, mechanics and tradespeople. She is a shining example of how investing in young talent can drive the future of an entire industry.

Hickory Sticks Open
S tep back in time and swing into a Pebble Beach tradition at the annual Hickory Sticks Open — a fun (and fulfilling) celebration of golf's heritage, complete with stylish knickers, vintage clubs and the iconic sound of bagpipes that have drawn guests to the resort for decades. Since teeing off in 2011, this beloved Foundation fundraiser has raised over $990,000 to support vital programs and scholarships for youth across Monterey County, and it continues to grow in popularity thanks to its memorable experience and deeper purpose. Now in its 13th year, the Hickory Sticks Open attracts golfers eager to embrace the challenge of classic equipment — a nostalgic and humbling nod to the past with each roll of the replica mesh golf ball. The energy is always high and laughs are abundant, especially when legendary sports announcer Jim Nantz steps in to call the action. In between holes, attendees are treated to gourmet bites from Hay’s Place, craft cocktails from our generous sponsors and unforgettable views of the Monterey Bay from The Hay — the Pebble Beach short course re-imagined by Tiger Woods and TGR Design in 2021. A silent auction creates bidding wars for charity onsite and online through Bidding for Good, allowing supporters nationwide to participate and support our initiatives. This special tradition of giving allows the Foundation to help uplift young lives in our community. As a result, our future looks brighter than ever. See you on the course!

Hosted by Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the festival not only delivered world- class culinary experiences, but also generated significant support for Monterey County’s youth, with ticket revenues furthering the Foundation’s mission in literacy, education, mental health and family services. The Foundation Table T he second annual Foundation Table event at Pebble Beach Food & Wine was a celebration of culinary excellence and Pebble Beach Company Foundation’s 50 years of giving, in support of the educational needs of Monterey County youth. More than 120 Foundation advocates were on hand at The Beach Club for the event headlined by renowned chefs Alice Waters and Jonathan Waxman. The Foundation Table debuted last year as a celebration of our family of benefactors, donors and partner agencies focused on helping children reach their full potential. Culinary legends and James Beard honorees Waters and Waxman teamed with students from the Drummond Culinary Academy at Rancho Cielo to prepare the memorable world-class meal paired with wines from Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Rancho Cielo provides challenged youth education, training, counseling and life skills development in a safe, affirming environment. Remembering Wendy... In 2024 we lost our dear friend Wendy Heilmann. As Director of Wine & Spirits for Pebble Beach Company, she was instrumental in growing the Hickory Sticks Open's silent auction by securing numerous exquisite donations from valued wine and spirit vendors. Since the inception of the tournament, she was on-hand to ensure a successful auction to provide support to the youth we serve. She is greatly missed.
