In the Bible, we learn about three principles foundational to marital fulfillment. II. Principle 1: A marriage of unity, understanding, and love is not rooted in romance, but in worship. A. Human beings are worshipers: worship is your identity before it’s ever your activity. B. Luke 6:43-45. 1. Your words and behavior are more caused by what’s inside of you than what’s outside of you, because the heart is the causal core of your personhood. SESSION 2 2. The ineffectiveness of “apple-nailing,” and its three most common strategies: a. Threat. b. Manipulation. c. Guilt. 3. We learn three important things about marriage from this passage: a. All marriage problems are heart problems. b. Lasting change in your marriage will always travel through the pathway of the heart. c. “I am my biggest marriage problem.” SESSION 3 III. Principle 2: Sin causes us to shrink our lives down to the size of our lives. A. 2 Cor 5:14-15: 1. This passage teaches three important things about sin: a. The DNA of sin is selfishness. b. Sin is antisocial in its fundamental form. c. Sin will cause you to dehumanize that other person in your marriage. 2. Examples of the petty selfishness of sin. a. Life will never be about you because you’ve been born into a world that, by its very nature, is a celebration of another.
