Everyone lives for some kind of treasure. b. The thing that is your treasure will control your heart. c. What controls your heart will control your words and your behavior. 2. The treasure principles applied to marriage: a. This side of eternity, it’s very hard to keep what God says is important, important in your heart. b. Your treasure will either victimize your marriage or enhance it. SESSION 6 3. Jesus warns against two categories of sinful priority:
a. Earth-bound treasures. b. Anxiety-bound needs. 4. Jesus gives the cure for these ills: forsake the kingdom of self and seek the better kingdom—the Kingdom of God. SESSION 7 B. Matt 6:33 applied: Seeking God’s Kingdom in your marriage.
1. Gal 5:13-23: People in a good marriage say “No!” to themselves. a. Gal 5:13-15: the kingdom of self versus the Kingdom of God. i. We say “No” to ourselves by the power of the Spirit at work within us (Eph 3:20). ii. Only people who love God above all else will ever love their neighbor—and their spouse—as themselves.
iii. You don’t first fix marriages horizontally ; you fix them first vertically . iv. 1 John 4:7-11: a cruciform definition of love: “willing self-sacrifice for the good of another that does not demand reciprocation or that the person being loved is deserving.”
