By starting our own NCP, we hope to serve our aging neighbors in a way that dignifies and includes them throughout the community.“ Beginning August 1st, the Steering Committee has determined that AVIS will begin to provide support and services to residents who are aged 55 years old and older, with priority given to those aged 60 years and older. The volunteers will provide friendly phone calls and visits, and light housekeeping, yard work, and home maintenance, as well as dog walking. AVIS is continuing to develop the Neighbors Care Program and is seeking to recruit and train more volunteers, as well as wanting to hear from residents in the Amphi neighborhood who may need any of the services listed. The Amphi neighborhood is launching a Neighbors Care Program (NCP) -- Amphi Volunteers in Service! The City of Tucson’s Amphi neighborhood is nestled in Ward III and within the boundaries of Fort Lowell and Roger Roads, and Oracle Road and First Avenue. Like most neighborhoods the area is comprised of a combination of single and multi-family homes, apartments, and condo/townhome communities, as well as businesses, churches, and social service agencies. The residents are diverse and united, and they want to help the older adults within their community to continue to live and thrive independently in their homes! Amphi Volunteers in Service (AVIS) has a dedicated group of community members who have been meeting since April 2023 to discuss the needs of the older adults in their community. It all started perhaps when Tom Hruska, Pastor to Senior Adults, New Life Community Church of the Nazarene attended an information session on “How to Start a Neighbors Care Program” at PCOA. Tom may have initiated the conversation but very quickly dedicated members of the community have stepped forward and formed an AVIS Steering Committee to develop the volunteer program. Many of them live alone and experience isolation. Our church seeks to care for those within our congregation, but there are many more people in the neighborhood whom we aren’t able to serve.
