income. Not every one, perhaps, realizes that the deductions, by offsetting tax able income, lowers the actual cost of making a contribution. For example, if a married couple had an adjusted gross income of $5,000, they would be allowed to contribute to the extent of $1,000. or 20%. But as a matter of fact, their $1,000 contribution would only cost them $778, for it would be reducing the amount of taxable income that much. This deduction increases on a scale. For instance, if one had an adjusted gross income of $100,000, he would be allowed to give up to $20,000. Yet this charitable contribution would cost him merely $2,- 638. Many Christians are taking this occasion to review their entire plans for giving. No Third World War & Prime Minister Winston Churchill said recently that he thinks a new world war is unlikely. He went on, “We all hate and fear war . . . and both sides know it would begin with horrors of a kind and on a scale never dreamed of before by human beings. It would begin by both sides in Europe suffering in the very first stage exactly what they dread ed the most.” With this we believe the Bible to be in agreement, that God will not allow mankind to violently obliter ate himself from the earth. When judg ment is being poured out, it will be God Himself who does it. Communist Infiltration The Communists, having failed to check Christianity in East Germany by simple harassment, have shifted tactics. They are now trying to wreck the Christian churches by infiltration which means that they are directing their organizers to get into the church bodies and spread Marxist doctrine. A sample: “ Socialism today gives the Christian the best chance to fulfill the aims of Christ and to practice practical Christi anity. The doctrine developed by Karl Marx for the erection of a better social order found exemplary realization in the socialist Soviet Union.” This is strong medicine for the Chris tian church. What must needs be done in East Germany if the situation is to be saved will be to draw the line of be lief exceedingly tight and refuse to ad mit anyone who does not fully subscribe to all the great doctrines of the faith. Moderates Become Problems Dr. Andrew C. Ivy, dean of the medi cal school at the University of Illinois points out that one in five moderate drinkers will eventually become a prob lem drinker. He said, “ Probably a major ity of the doctors in this country follow public opinion. It’s now the fashion to make light of the evils of drink and to exaggerate the benefits of alcohol as a medicine.” His idea is that all liquor should be sold on a doctor’s prescription. And he believes that only total absti nence solves the drinking problem and with this we concur. (Continued on Page 30) T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S

Catholic Opinion Recently a side light on the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church toward Protestant marriages was given by Bishop Russell J. McVinney of the Prov idence, Rhode Island diocese. “ Catholic lawyers are forbidden ‘under pain of mortal sin’ to represent plaintiffs in suits for separation, divorce or annul ment of a marriage performed by a Catholic priest, unless they obtain prior permission of their bishop. “ Catholics may not be present at mar riages ‘attempted’ by a Catholic before a non-Catholic clergyman or a justice of the peace, and they must not show their approval (e.g., by attending a wedding party, giving a wedding gift). “ Catholics who are themselves invalid- ly married may not act as witnesses, ushers, or bridesmaids at a Catholic wedding. Similarly, all Catholics are for bidden to act as witnesses, ushers or bridesmaids at weddings which are not performed by a Catholic priest.” No Temple Yet ■£ According to the National Jewish Post the construction of the Jewish temple will have to wait on the building of a world synagogue. The Post states: “ Jewry is not ready for the recon struction of the traditional Holy Temple in Jerusalem, Shiomo Z. Shragai, mayor of the 3,000-year-old capital of ancient Israel, said in Boston recently. But he revealed plans for a handsome modern- day substitute, a 10,000-capacity central world synagogue in Jerusalem. Every Jewish congregation in the world — Orthodox, Conservative, Reform—will be invited to share in construction of the mammoth edifice, he disclosed, in return for which their names will be inscribed in plaques to be placed on the seats of the synagogue. The Beth Knesset, as the synagogue will be called, will be repre sentative of the religious ideals and mo tivations of all Jewry, and will represent the convocation areas of the ancient Temple. Already 500,000 dollars has been offered by the Mazur family of New York to pay for an Aron Kodesh, Holy Ark, for the synagogue.” No Cigars Jimmy Parmenter, 23-month-old cigar smoker, was taken off tobacco on an order by Judge Walter Criswell of the juvenile court in Jackonsville, Florida. Judge Criswell reviewed the charges that the parents of Jimmy were not given proper parental care and guard ianship and held, “ It is altogether silly, ridiculous and crazy (for Jimmy to smoke cigars). It is bad for the health of the child, and you’ll have other ignor ant people weaning their children on cigars.” He warned if there was any more of this he would bind them over to criminal court. Sunshine Causes Cancer? A Tampa, Florida physician, Dr. Morris Waisman, suggests that sunshine is so injurious to people with certain types of skin that pre-employment ex amination for outdoor work will become essential. He points out that exposed Page Twenty-four

skin becomes leathery, wrinkled, inelas tic, freckled and dotted with small le sions which may develop into cancer. Furthermore, he said that cancer of the skin is much more common in the south than in the north and it is safe to say that the incidence in Florida is five times that of northern States. All of which has a tremendous bearing on the current craze of sun worship. Athletes Give Advice In the current Clipsheet of the Board of Temperance of the Methodist Church a series of testimonies by 32 outstanding football players proves that it’s smarter not to drink. Among the testimonies which included Moomaw, Campanella, Klosterman, Price, Burkhart and others, Bill Reichardt, offensive back at Iowa, says, “ I am a .total abstainer. I believe that people my age can enjoy a healthy, clean and strong life without alcohol. When God gives us a strong body, it is up to each individual to maintain it through clean living and clean thought and not abuse it by consumption of beer or liquor.” Ninety-nine Per Cent Believe
