that city staff deserve themain share of credit for keeping both the budget tax load and user fee rates at zero-per cent increases. “The council cannot take the whole credit for this,” he said. “Our employees did a lot of work.” “These are all things that affect our young families,” he said, adding that if there is any leftover money from the proceeds of last year’s annual mayor’s golf tournament, Des- jardins plans to ask council to approve using it to provide free pool access at the YMCA during the March school break period. Assuming there is any room available in the budget, themayor has another commu- nity recreation idea he would like to put in front of council for future consideration. Desjardins wants Clarence-Rockland to host its own major invitational hockey tourna- ment, if not this season, then maybe next season. “We have had no (major) hockey tour- nament in Clarence-Rockland for years,” Desjardins said. “That kind of event brings in money for everyone.” Clarence-Rockland does host a variety of smaller recreational hockey tournaments. Desjardins would like to see something big- ger that could attract some “names” in the lower-tier competitive hockey leagues. If this year’s recreation budget has no wiggle roomavailable to help the city sponsor such an event, thenDesjardins will ask city staff to look for other sources of support funding or come back to council with any suggestions or ideas for partnerships. dans une résidence de la rue Laurier de Rockland. He’s been through the municipal bud- get grind more than once during his past few terms on city council for Clarence- Rockland. But this was the first budget for Guy Desjardins where he got to sign off on it with the title of “mayor” in front of his name and he feels pretty good about the results. “We came out with zero per cent (inc- rease) in taxes,” said Desjardins during a recent interview following one of the last budget sessions of council. What pleases Desjardins most is that his first budget as a first-timemayor also sees no increase in the user fees for many services that some residents of Clarence-Rockland consider to be essential.
