The Lakes South Morang College respectfully acknowledges that beneath the significant River Red Gums that feature across our school's landscape lay the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri-Willam people of the Kulin Nation. Effective implementation of the mobile phone policy Increased attendance and punctuality Students bringing required materials and equipment to class, including new folders on the Secondary Campus Student Leadership opportunities and voice Adherence to meet all timelines, including excursion forms and documentation Congratulations to all students who have achieved, or made significant progress toward their academic goals in Term One. We extend particular commendations to those who received Learner of the Term Awards at our end-of-Term assembly. At the beginning of the year, our highly committed teachers worked alongside the leadership team to identify key focus areas to support continued improvement in student performance. We recognised the need for greater consistency in the following operational areas:

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COLLEGE REPORT

Notable impacts in Term One include: This positivity is clearly visible and sets a strong tone for our school community. Although our overarching goal at the beginning was to embed programs and implement policy to the highest standard this year, what is actually happening is quite different: We are well and truly pivoting to lift the bar with Term One data far exceeding initial targets, largely as a result of targeted planning, understanding student learning and wellbeing needs, and listening to and empowering our students to take increased responsibilities for their learning. SCHOOL COUNCIL This focus has led to a broader, positive shift across College operations. We have seen an increase in: completed assessments, enhanced student involvement in leadership; enrolment in our new enhancement programs - sitting at capacity, and a strong commitment from students to embrace learning challenges and remain focused throughout the day.

We welcomed our 2026 School Council team last Tuesday and look forward to their ideas, insights and leadership as we begin a year of school review. We are pleased to introduce our new parent/carer members Jo, Laura and Katie, who join returning members Amanda, Grant and Anna-Lisa in their second year. Janavi joins as our new student representative alongside Taylor, and we also welcome new staff representatives Ms Hayton (Primary) and Mrs Greaves (Secondary). Our executive team continues to play a vital role in overseeing and ensuring the effective implementation of finance, education policy and procedures, facilities, and community engagement, including fundraising initiatives. The first responsibility of the new Council was to approve the 2025 Annual Report to the School Community. The report will now be submitted to the Department of Education for approval and quality assurance before being published on the college website as official documentation. INDUSTRIAL ACTION We thank our families for their understanding and support during the recent industrial action campaign. We worked diligently to provide timely and accurate communication via Compass and to give as much notice as possible regarding changes to College operations. We acknowledge the inconvenience caused and the impact on family and work commitments. This is why we aim to schedule all Pupil Free Days at the beginning of the school year in consultation with our executive team and School Council. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Congratulations to Mrs King, Ms Price and the PE team, along with staff and student organisers, for delivering a fantastic Athletics Day at the Meadowglen Athletics Track. Students proudly represented their Houses, demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, and competed with enthusiasm. A number of students have achieved qualifying results and will go on to represent the College at District level. We wish them every success as they aim for finals in Term 2. Thank you also to the many families who attended and supported our students, contributing to a vibrant and encouraging atmosphere throughout the day.

Consistent implementation of school practices -reflected and readily observed in safe and calmer classrooms resulting in record student attendance across all levels with primary up 0.68% to 91.35% and secondary up 0.74% to 85.35%. This is above the state median and a credit to all of our parents/carers and families who are fostering the importance of continuity with school attendance and high expectation. Increased reports of positive behaviour and school service - higher rates of punctuality and a strong problem- solving mindset from all students. Staff contact with parent/carers regarding selfless and positive contributions by students either with their school work or leadership is up 23% in comparison to the same time last year. A significant reduction of Incident Reports for challenging behaviour - although our College was already well below the state median for incidents: a. Minor and Medium incidents which include low level class disruption, disrespect towards peers and teachers, and not bringing the correct equipment to classes is down 50% b. Major incidents including aggression, intimidation, harassment and any form of bullying are down 25% c . School suspensions are down 60% on the same time last year. A revitalised student leadership program - more students than ever are now involved meaningful leadership roles influencing learning, wellbeing, and events- a record 72 students from both the Primary and Secondary Campuses are in active leadership roles driving the College Strategic Plan focusing on school improvements and learning opportunities for all students. The introduction of new development programs in performing and visual arts, as well as athletics, which has driven high levels of student engagement and motivation across the College. Over 90 students are enrolled in the new programs which is very exciting and will most likely positively improve our median rating in student Attitude to School survey results and our overall commitment to academic rigour across all learning programs. The expansion of the VIA program to Year 5 and 6, providing 26 Primary students with early opportunities to build skills, challenge themselves, and prepare for future learning.

POLICY SPOTLIGHT

COLLEGE CURRICULUM LEVIES A heartfelt thank you to the 16% of families who have already paid the 2026 College levies. We recognise that this year, the participation rate is lower than in previous years, likely due to the rising cost of living that many families are facing. However, we want to emphasise the significance that these levies have on our College budget. The funds collected through levies are essential for maintaining our beautiful grounds and facilities, supporting administration, and providing necessary resources such as first aid supplies in the General Offices. Our School Council works diligently to ensure that curriculum levies are kept to a minimum, focusing only on the essentials to encourage a better uptake from families. While the levy is completely voluntary, it is not too late to make a difference for our College and our students. LEARNER REVIEW DAY Attendance at our recent Learner Review Day was lower than in previous years, with 65% participation at the Primary Campus and 45% at the SecondaryCcampus. Following consultation with leadership, staff and School Council, we believe this was due to the timing—being scheduled soon after the “Meet & Greet Day” and immediately following a public holiday.

As a result, future Learner Review Days will be held in the final fortnight of Term 1 to better support family engagement.

DRIVER SAFETY ON GORDONS ROAD Be extra careful on the roads around our College. Our expanded education precinct means more students and more traffic, pedestrians, scooters, bicycles & cars. Please remind your children to use the marked and armed school crossings before and after school, to be vigilant at all times and to be respectful to all community members, especially around Mill Park Lakes shopping centre, including Coles. Our students are expected to set the tone for other children, especially when unsupervised. Mrs Farrelly, our School Council President, has written on behalf of our College and our neighbouring schools in our precinct to the Local Council seeking speed humps along Gordons Road- the safety of our children is paramount, and we need to collectively lobby our local members of parliament and our local government leaders to get this initiative actioned. STAY SAFE OVER THE TERM ONE HOLIDAYS To all our families, have a safe and wonderful Term One break and we look forward to resuming where we have left off at the beginning of Term Two. To families celebrating Easter, we extend our easter sentiments of goodwill and peace and hope that the easter bunny delivers some nice eggs too!

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT

March School Council Meeting Following the AGM, our regular March meeting commenced. At this meeting we: Heard from our Primary Captains on their aspirations for the year ahead. Agreed for School Council to write to the City of Whittlesea requesting the installation of speed humps along Gordons Road, in between The Lakes Boulevard and Jardier Terrace. This is in response to the serious accident that happened outside of the Secondary Campus on 16 March and ongoing concerns about speeding and driver behaviour. This is a significant issue with over 1000 students travelling along this road, from our school, the Collingwood English Language School and Merriang Special Development School. Endorsed an amendment to the Excursion Policy that students are not to meet, disembark, or travel via train stations as part of school excursions. This is an interim measure for 2026, due to heightened community concerns related to ongoing activity around train stations. This amendment will apply for 2026 only and School Council will review at the end of the year and determine whether this continues in 2027. Discussed the timing of Learner Review Meetings. This year, Primary Campus Learner Review Meetings were moved forward to be held on the same day as the Secondary Campus, however the percentage of families booking an appointment was significantly down compared to previous years. We endorsed that Learner Review Meetings will revert to either week 10 or 11 in Term 1 2027. Discussed the planning for the Mother’s Day stall and breakfast to be held in May. Discussed how to increase School Council’s focus on the Secondary Campus for 2026. This includes gaining a clearer understanding of the full teaching and learning journey at Secondary and the need to better promote the school, as it is still widely perceived as P-9 school by the community, not realising that we now offer a VCE program. Discussed if there was a need to pursue a school holiday program at The Lakes with Camp Australia. Community Issues & Parent Feedback School Council is here to represent the whole school community, so if you have any issues, ideas or questions for upcoming meetings, or need support, please contact a member or email amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au. We also welcome suggestions on how families can better partner with the school to support student learning and strengthen our community.

Hello Parents & Carers,

We value your partnership in helping us provide the best possible learning environment in 2026.

ART ENRICHMENT ON PRIMARY

This Term the Primary Campus proudly launched a new Art Enrichment Program, giving young passionate artists an exciting opportunity to extend and develop their skills further and express themselves creatively through a range of engaging art experiences. It has been a joy watching students take creative risks, discover new techniques and grow in confidence as independent artists. Stay tuned for an upcoming Mini art exhibition that will showcase students’ wonderful learnings and the stories behind their creative choice!

These photos capture our young artists deeply engaged in their creative process.

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS:

I’m enjoying making art constantly. I’m making a blind bag with my friend. I’m learning that if you keep trying, you’ll always get it right – Eleftheria 4A

What I’m liking about the art enrichment club is that I’m getting extra time to make art with my friends. I’m learning how to use different art techniques to make different artworks and show my friends and ask for their opinions – Matzu 3B I’m enjoying meeting new friends and learning how to sculpt clay. This is the best club ever! - Anorah 3A I’m liking that it is fun. You can build things with boxes or clay or anything. I’m enjoying that I got to use clay and sculpt a duck. I’m learning that it’s not easy to make a duck with clay. I had to use my hands a lot to make it. I had a few failures but I was able to make a random head which turned out to be a duck – Emily 3A

I’m making this character from a popular game. I made it with clay and I keep on messing it up. The head keeps on falling apart so I am putting wire in the head and the body so it can stick – Ray 4B

I’m making my own version of Pokémon. It’s called Charmander. I drew the idea of my character from different Pokémon’s. I am using cardboard, paper, tape, glue and paint to create it – Bea 4B

Primary Interschool Sports

The 5/6 Interschool Sport program for Term 1 has now concluded, marking the end of a successful and engaging season for participating students. Throughout the Term, students had the opportunity to represent their school in weekly Friday morning matches across three sports: cricket, soccer and basketball. These sessions provided valuable experiences in teamwork, skill development and sportsmanship, while also encouraging active participation and healthy competition. Students demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm each week, contributing to a positive sporting environment and showcasing improvement in both individual and team performance. The consistent involvement across the Term highlights the importance of sport in building confidence, resilience and cooperation among students. Congratulations are extended to all students who participated, as well as staff who supported the organisation and supervision of the program. Their efforts ensured the smooth running of each session and contributed to an enjoyable experience for all involved. Looking ahead, Term 2 promises another exciting round of interschool sport. Students will have the opportunity to participate in netball, AFL and handball, continuing to build their skills and represent their school with pride.

Well done to all students on a fantastic Term 1 of sport, and we look forward to another successful season in Term 2.

YEAR 5/6 NOTEBOOK PROGRAM - 2026 We’re writing to inform you of an important change to our technology program for Year 5 and 6 students starting in 2026. After careful consideration and in consultation with the School Council and broader school community, The Lakes South Morang College has made the decision to transition from iPads to Windows touchscreen notebook computers for students in Years 5 and 6. This move aligns our Primary and Secondary learning experiences and brings our technology use in line with most primary schools across Victoria, who have already adopted Windows-based programs. It also ensures our students are better prepared for the digital expectations of Year 7 and beyond. Why Are We Transitioning to Notebooks? While iPads have served many learning purposes, they are limited in supporting the broader skills needed in upper primary and secondary education. Windows-based touchscreen notebooks: Offer a full desktop computing experience Support keyboard proficiency and multitasking Provide compatibility with the software and systems used from Year 7 onwards Offer improved file management, software flexibility, and better integration with our college systems Devices purchased through our approved portals will be

ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE LAKES SOUTH MORANG COLLEGE The Lakes South Morang College is situated near busy roads with heavy traffic throughout the day, with particular attention to the front of our school, where we have several busy intersections and shared pathways with Coles, Collingwood Language School, Merriang SDS and the Kinder. We strongly remind all families that students must always use the designated school crossings. We are increasingly noticing students exiting or entering vehicles while crossing or weaving through traffic, which poses a serious risk. Please use the designated drop-off zones and encourage your child to cross only at supervised crossings. Holding your child’s hand near roads and vehicles is a simple but effective way to support their safety. Please also take the time to talk with your child about how to stay safe near parked cars, footpaths, and driveways. Please note that the designated entry and exit gate on Lakes Boulevard will be closed in Term 1. This is due to construction on The Lakes South Morang College Kinder. Students and parents/carers are asked to either enter/exit the school through the Gordons Road gate or the front office.
