unit; BOBST unveiled its new hybrid flexo press; and OMET launched its new X7, a flexo printing machine for labels and flexible packaging with 26-inch web width and the latest in its XFlex line. “Exhibitor participation this year has been truly in- credible, not only in the number of returning compa- nies, but also the newcomers joining us for the first time,” said Lisa Milburn, Managing Director of Labelex- po Global Series.“It is astonishing to think that at the first show there were just 44 exhibitors —proof of how far the industry has grown in the last four decades.” At the Flexible Packaging Arena, visitors could watch as a BOBST M6 (UV Flexo) press produced indirect food contact flexible packaging to the latest GMP stan- dards, and live demonstrations took place throughout the four days of the show. Spread across nine exhibition halls, more than 600 confirmed exhibitors took part in Labelexpo Europe 2019. Between them, exhibitors demonstrated their latest innovations and technology including: digital and conventional printing presses; high tech label and packaging materials; finishing and converting systems; inspection, overprinting and label application equip- ment; inks and coatings; RFID and security solutions; and software and interactive technology. Labelexpo Europe 2019 was again strongly support- ed and endorsed by the trade bodies FINAT, AIMCAL, EUWID, Febelgra, SPPES, UNFEA and VskE. Label Industry Global Awards Avery Dennison, Esko, and GMG were among the cat- egory winners honored at this year’s Label Industry Global Awards, which took place September 24, the first night of Labelexpo Europe 2019. Now in its 16th edition, the awards recognize the most innovative, influential and successful work from the label and package printing industry across the globe in the last twelve months. It was the largest La- bel Industry Global Awards event yet as it also cele- brated the 40th anniversary of Labelexpo. The Award for Innovation ( for companies with up to 300 employees ), sponsored by Flint Group Narrow Web, was presented to GMG GmbH & Co. KG , for its GMG Calibration CreationWizard.Developed to en- able customers to create color-accurate mock-ups for labels, flexible packaging and cartons, the judges were impressed with how the company had connected GMG Color Management software with an Epson SC- S80600 to achieve such accurate reproducible proofs. The Award for Innovation ( for companies with more than 300 employees ), sponsored by Xeikon, went to Esko for its Esko Print Control Wizard software, devel-

oped to simplify the implementation of screens and dot gain curves in the reprographics process. Designed to improve the flexo plate making process and flexog- raphic print quality via Crystal Screens, Print Control Wizard is said to offer the sector a simplified, standard- ized approach to take process parameters like ink,print- ing press, substrate and aniloxes into consideration for screen and curve creation.Print ControlWizard outputs a set of Crystal Screens and curves used for plate ex- posing on a CDI Crystal XPS, reportedly resulting in the most optimal flexo print quality. This Label Industry Global Award is the latest acco- lade for the technology, following previously winning the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) and Eu- ropean Flexographic Industry Association (EFIA) Tech- nical Innovation awards. Avery Dennison won the Environmental & Sustain- ability Award, sponsored by Labels & Labeling, for its Recycled PET Liners. The launch of the product in Eu- rope has focused on meeting sustainability objectives and the need to support recycling in the packaging industry. The judges were impressed that the sustain- able liners were made with 30 percent recycled PET post-consumer waste from PET bottles, while main- taining the technical qualifications the liner material needs for supply chain labeling success. The Rising Star Award, sponsored by the Label Acad- emy and Avery Dennison, went to Robert Rae of GEW. Rae joined the company in 2014 following an early ca- reer in research with P&G.With a top chemistry degree from Durham University, his skills have enabled him to make an immediate contribution toward developing an LED product introduced in 2016, and now in launching a new LED system at Labelexpo 2019. He has also been heavily involved with the UVFoodSafe Group. The European Converter of the Year Award, spon- sored by Grafisk Maskinfabrik, went to Reynders. Founded in 1956, Reynders today has label plants and Centers of Excellence in Belgium,France,Poland,Spain and India. The judges felt that its recent developments in digitally printed, full-color booklets were especially noteworthy, since after only 18 months, the company’s investment in the production of ‘loyalty stamps’ has re- sulted in over six billion labels printed and supplied to all corners of the world. Reynders also promotes sus- tainable label alternatives, with a planned installation of 800+ solar panels and investments to reduce water, gas and electricity consumption. Its emphasis on ca- reer growth and after work activities for employees also impressed judges. A Special Recognition Award, sponsored by ILS, was also made to Clive Smith, founder of Labelexpo, hon-

Negotiations with First Impression, a part of the Hirt & Carter Group, started in September 2018 when they reached out to CSM in need of assistance with mov- ing and re-installing both Nilpeter and other auxiliary equipment. Furthermore, these talks also included — and resulted in — the acquisition of a new 17-inch FA- Line press, and planned equipment upgrades of First Impression’s existing Nilpeter presses. Planned upcoming upgrades of First Impression’s existing Nilpeter presses includes turning its 8-color FA-Line press, installed in June 2018, into a 10-color mirror image of the new 17-inch FA-Line press. Still to be completed are software and unit upgrades of First Impression’s older Nilpeter equipment. Down Time Lean manufacturing techniques are explained in this course to help eliminate waste in the change-over time between jobs. The waste reduction tool TIMWOOD is used by all the participants to identify seven types of waste.A vid- eo of a ten-minute set-up shows the operators tracked using a spaghetti diagram, then the process of prioritiz- ing and leveling the work is described. The duties, as well as the time it takes to accomplish them, are analyzed, and the necessary training is com- pleted. Most often this results in a set-up time reduced by half. “Reducing set-up time is the holy grail to convert- ers,” said Michael D’Angelo, AICC President. “This course properly addresses the techniques necessary to become more efficient in your operations. Savings achieved falls right to the bottom-line.”

Stora Enso has implemented 5G technology to en- able high density (HD) 360-degree camera solutions in their production environment. On September 15, this solution was awarded second place in the Industry of ThingsWorld Award 2019. Making Connections The 5G technology enables deployment of appli- cations requiring fast and powerful wireless connec- tions, such as augmented- and virtual reality applica- tions, as well as real-time 360-degree camera solutions. The newly implemented 360-degree cameras, in Stora Enso’s production environment, are utilized to pro- duce high density (HD) video streams which can be viewed in real-time and enabling fast, reliable remote monitoring. The 5G connection, in combination with the 360° video stream, means that all necessary information is easily and visually at the disposal of Stora Enso experts all around the world. When something unexpected happens, the video stream gives a real-time view and information of the event, irrespectively of geographi- cal distance.
