pondered by all P ro testan ts: “The rig h t of deposing K ings is inh eren t in th e suprem e sovereignty which the Popes as vicegerents of Christ, exercise over all Christian nations. When, therefore, for the common good, The Head of the Church exercises his su preme au th o rity eith er by excommuni cating individuals, by laying nations under an interdict, or by deposing Kings, all Christian people are bound to obey his decree.” (Taken from Cardinal Manning’s Essays on Religion and L iteratu re, 1867.) The following claim for th e Pope is also quoted from Cardinal Manning’s Sermons on Eccle siastical Subjects, Yol. 3, p. 97; “ I acknowledge no civil superior, I am subject to no prince. I claim to be th e supreme judge on ea rth and director of th e consciences of men— of th e peasant th a t tills the field, and th e prince th a t sits on th e th ron e; of th e household th a t lives in th e shade of privacy, and th e leg islatu re th a t makes laws for kingdom s.” Mr. K ensit shows how th e Roman Catholics as far back a t 1874 were planning for a continental w ar th a t would p u t th e Pope back on the throne. He shows th is from an u tteran ce of Cardinal Manning’s on Ja n u ary 24th, 1874, as given in th e “T ablet.” Car dinal Manning said, “There is only one solution of th e difficulty, a solution, I fear, impending, and th a t is th e terrib le scourge of Continental war, a w ar which w ill exceed th e ho rro rs of any of th e wars of th e F irs t Empire. And it is my firm conviction th a t, in spite of all obstacles, th e Vicar of Jesus Christ will be p u t again in his own rig h tfu l place. B u t th a t day will not be un til his adver saries have crushed each o th er w ith m utual destruction.” On page thirty-nine, Mr. K ensit says th a t the B ritish F oreign Office “ has pome under th e sway of a num ber of highly placed perm anent Roman Cath olic officials.” The London Times of December 21st, 1916, contained the fol lowing p arag raph ; “The R igh t Hon. A. J. Balfour, M. P. Secretary of S tate for Foreign Affairs, has appointed th e fol lowing to be his private Secretaries: The Hon. Jam es E ric Drummond, C. B., p riv ate secretary; th e Hon. Theo. Rus sell, C.1B. O., diplomatic private secre ta ry ; Mr. Cecil Dormer, assistan t pri vate secretary; Mr. Ian Zachary Mal colm, M. P. P arliam en tary private sec re ta ry .” Mr. K ensit goes on to say,
“The first th ree names are all Roman Catholics, w hilst Mr. Ian Malcolm is a most advanced ritu a list. Then when Germany was crum bling in October, 1918, Sir. Wm. Tyrrell was made Assist a n t Under-Secretary of S tate for F o r eign Affairs. His re tu rn to th e Foreign Office immensely increases the Roman epidemic in th a t Department, and also brings back one stated by P rince Lich- nowsky to be possessed of Germanophil leanings. This reign of Clericalism in our Foreign Office is most serious.” But one should read the whole book.
