Our Professional Services staff are committed to delivering an exceptional student experience and to supporting quality research. The Director of Student Services, reporting to the Academic Registrar, will lead a skilled and talented team within the Directorate of Student and Academic Services, building on existing high performance and working in close partnership with other Directorates, Faculties, students and external partners. As we look ahead to 2020 and beyond, Keele will be a University characterised by ‘aspiration and ambition’ – an aspirational destination for students and staff. The Director of Student Services will play a full role in enabling this vision. The Role Director of Student Services

The Director of Student Services leads a team of around 45 staff within the wider Directorate of Student and Academic Services, delivering services to ensure that our students are safe, supported and able to thrive in their academic environment.

Main Tasks and Accountabilities • To direct and manage the strategic

development of Student Services, in line with the wider ambitions of the Directorate of Student and Academic Services and the University’s strategic plan. • To support the formulation and implementation of strategy and specific projects for enhancing the student experience, including the holistic delivery of student support across the campus, a coordinated approach to student communications across professional services and the further development of ‘one-stop-shop’ service provision. • To review, evaluate and report on performance within Student Services, ensuring the provision of relevant data and analysis and benchmarking against sector best practice in order to recommend and deliver consequent improvements. • To ensure the delivery of high quality, personalised and responsive services to students and other users from across the Keele community. • To actively seek and respond to student feedback and ensure that students’ changing needs are taken into account in service development and delivery.

The Director will be responsible for a Student Services budget of over £1.5m, including student hardship funds, as well as taking shared responsibility for oversight of institutional bursary expenditure.

The Director reports to the Academic Registrar and will be expected to deputise and act on her behalf when required. In order to be effective in a wide-ranging role, the Director will need to develop and maintain strong working relationships with senior academic and professional colleagues across the University, with the Students’ Union and with student representatives. They will also be expected to engage with cognate professionals at other institutions through AMOSSHE and other networks, and with relevant voluntary and third-sector organisations, in order to stay informed of key developments in the sector and capture best practice.

The Director of Student Services has particular responsibility for teams encompassing student welfare and support; disability and dyslexia support; counselling, mental health and wellbeing, and the University Chaplaincy. The Director also oversees the University’s Student Services Centre, as a ‘one stop shop’ for student information, support and guidance. The Director will lead, encourage and foster a culture of student- centred, personal and personable service delivery. They will champion and develop innovative practice to enable the University and its students to achieve their ambitions,

and to ensure a transformative experience for students whilst safeguarding their health and wellbeing.

Keele also has high quality teaching; recently assessed as ‘Gold’ in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Keele was the first new post-war UK university of the 20th Century and exemplified the innovation and idealism of the post-war generations, offering bold alternative visions for Higher Education. The University College of North Staffordshire was founded in 1949 and received its Royal Charter as the University of Keele in 1962. There was a deliberate aim to break away from the pattern of the specialised honours degree, avoiding as far as possible the divisions between different branches of study. Whilst there have been changes, the coherence of Keele’s academic vision remains. One third of our current students still study two subjects to honours level. The most recent REF classified 97% of the University’s research as world-leading or of international importance. The innovations and discoveries of Keele academics are key contributors to wider social and global issues, and it is important to Keele that our educational delivery is research-led.

An Education that Inspires Keele offers distinctive programmes and a learning environment that enables our students to make the most of their time at University.

We have extensive outreach and widening participation activity, including being lead institution of one of the 29 HEFCE-funded NCOP schemes; Higher Horizons+. Colleagues across the institution work with thousands of school-aged students, their parents and teachers, giving guidance on higher education choices and delivering aspiration-raising activities both on and off campus. The campus offers a wide range of co-curricular activities which are an important part of our broad degree offering, which extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom. With 10,000 students and 2,000 staff living and working on the Keele campus, we are the size of a small town. We have a strong postgraduate community, and have a clear strategy to grow both postgraduate taught and research student numbers. Our postgraduate research numbers have grown significantly over the last 5 years.

Student and Academic Services Overview The Directorate of Student and Academic Services (SAS) was formed in August 2017. It brings together the student services that ensure students are safe, supported and able to thrive in their academic environment with the academic services that facilitate a smooth working and learning environment for students and for academic and professional staff.

Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, many of our students and a number of our staff live, as well as study and work here: boasting a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community.

Qualifications and Experience • Significant experience in a student services leadership role in a higher education setting. • A proven track record in successfully managing a multi-functional team in a large and complex organisation. • Proven ability to lead and manage professional staff and to cultivate a strong customer service culture. • A sound understanding of good practice in the delivery of student services and of relevant statutory and regulatory requirements. • Evidence of successful delivery of initiatives to enhance student wellbeing and the student experience.

The Senate, which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, including ex-officio members, elected members and student members, is the principal academic authority of the University. It oversees academic management, including the curriculum and the maintenance of academic standards. The Vice-Chancellor is the principal Executive Officer of the University. The senior executive group within the University is referred to as the University Executive committee (UEC) and is responsible for strategic development and operational management of the University. Membership of all three committees is shown below.

The day-to-day governance of the University is the responsibility of the Council, which comprises 22 members, the majority of whom (14) are lay members drawn from industry and the community. The remaining members, are drawn from the academic and professional support staff and the Presidents of Keele Students’ Union and the Keele Postgraduate Association. The Council meets five times per annum chaired by the Pro-Chancellor, and ‘governs, manages and regulates the finances, accounts, investments, property, business and all affairs whatsoever of the University’.

AIM 3 To deliver international excellence and impact in focussed areas of research: • Be a centre of world-leading excellence in focussed research areas and have an international profile in all disciplines. • Provide a supportive environment for all research active staff. • Enlarge our Postgraduate Research community. • Maximise impact and realise social, economic, health, environmental and cultural benefits of the research we do. • Build key research partnerships. • Appoint, develop and retain outstanding researchers. • Be a top quartile research university in REF 2020.

AIM 4 To contribute positively to the society, economy, culture, health and well-being of the communities we serve: • Develop partnerships with business and industry. • Collaborate with local communities, enterprise and the Third Sector. • Develop the University as an integrated innovation campus. • Increase the number of people who come onto campus for Continuing Professional Development. • Provide a supportive environment for Knowledge Exchange. • Actively promote the involvement of students and graduates with our collaborations and relationships, in part, through collaboration with the Students’ Union.

AIM 5 To promote environmental sustainability in all that we do: • Continue to improve the environmental sustainability of the University through campus developments, carbon reduction and the impact of University operations. • Have world-leading research in environmental  sustainability. • Educate our students on environmental issues and provide opportunities for them to put strategies into practice. • Provide leadership in application and implementation of environmental sustainability. • Be sector-leading in environmental education and engagement with business, external organisations and communities.

AIM 6 To transform how we work to ensure the University’s development is sustainable and delivers world-leading teaching and research: • Maintain financial sustainability and build revenue reserves. • Provide staff and students with excellent, innovative and reliable information technology and resources. • Develop the estate to meet the future education, research, academic and social needs of the University in the medium and longer term. • Strengthen the University’s reputation and the Keele brand. • Further develop a collegial and creative working culture to promote success, efficient services and a sense of inclusivity and shared ownership.
