REGIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP ON EMERGING SATELLITE TECHNOLOGIES ASIA-PACIFIC-Tuvalu

The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) and Viasat brought satellite connectivity into focus at the 19th APT Policy and Regulation Forum for Pacific (PRFP-19), held from 4–6 August 2026 in Funafuti, Tuvalu. Moderated by Leonard Obonyo, CTO’s Head of Digital Development, two dedicated sessions explored how satellite technologies can help address some of the Pacific’s most persistent connectivity challenges, from reaching remote and outer islands to strengthening communications during natural disasters. With contributions from Viasat and Vanuatu, discussions examined emerging satellite technologies, mobile satellite services and multi-orbit networks, as well as the growing convergence of satellite, terrestrial and mobile communications. For a region characterised by vast distances, dispersed populations and vulnerability to climate-related disasters, speakers underscored the importance of building communications networks that are not only connected, but resilient. The sessions highlighted a clear direction for the Pacific: the future of connectivity will not depend on one technology alone, but on an integrated ecosystem where satellite, terrestrial and mobile networks work together to keep communities connected.
