MESSAGE FROM ITU SECRETARY GENERAL

On behalf of the International Telecommunication Union, I warmly congratulate the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation on its 125th anniversary. Our partnership reflects more than a century of shared purpose, making this milestone one we mark together.

Both organizations have witnessed an extraordinary span of communications history: from the telegraph and wireless communications to satellite and broadband networks, and from digital services to artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies reshaping economies across the Commonwealth and beyond. Ours is also the story of ensuring policies, skills and institutions keep pace with rapid innovation, especially as we seek to make technology interoperable, trusted and inclusive for all. This was true in the age of the telegraph, and it remains true today, as digital technologies continue to transform how people learn, work, trade, and connect. CTO traces its origins back to 1901, 36 years after the ITU was founded, with early efforts to connect the Commonwealth through a Pacific cable — a technical feat that also required deep and sustained international cooperation. Today, 99% of international data flows through submarine cables: descendants of the very systems and collaboration that first brought Commonwealth countries together. CTO’s pledge to the Partner2Connect Digital Coalition on “Action for Connectivity Impact” is further evidence of your commitment to a better digital future for all. As emerging technologies like AI and quantum continue to evolve, the case for global cooperation and innovative partnerships only grows stronger.
