May 27, 2019

Every industry, large or small, is ulti- mately only as good as its people. This can be a serious challenge for more mature industries such as those asso- ciated with the printing and packag- ing markets. As the workforce ages, the realities of workforce and skills gaps are inevitable. Bold Action It’s not a particularly well-kept secret that our industry is greying. So indus- try leaders face an undeniable choice: Attract new, talented people to the in- dustry, paying close attention to diver- sity, or risk slipping into obscurity. With this need in mind, Flexo Mar- ket News is launching a new column entitled Flexo’s Future, which will look into the ways the flexo industry can work in concert to ensure its long- term viability by actively investing in its workforce. Recruiting, education, training — these are all much more than buzzwords. They are the secret to the industry’s longevity and success.

In many cases, the deluge of goals is an effort to revise past commitments, which were either unrealized or not ambi- tious enough to respond to heightened marketplace demands for packaging sustainability. This column came about in no small part due to the activism of Pamarco’s Katie Graham, who launches the series with the first installment on page 7 of this issue. Katie has been a strong, important advocate on behalf of the industry and will continue to contribute additional columns in the future, along with advice and guidance. FMN’s sincere gratitude goes out to her. Flexo Market News will be inviting other industry leaders to share their expertise in future installments, as well. The flexo converting industry finds itself at a bit of a crossroads, and investing now in ensuring we take the right path will pay huge dividends in the years ahead. Global Label Printing Market To Reach $49.9B In 2024 The global market for label printing has been grow- ing steadily from 2014 to 2019, at rates of 4.8 percent in value, according to a new report from Smithers Pira. The report, entitled The Future of Label Print- ing to 2024 , values the market to be worth $41.02 billion. This is a 4 percent increase on the 2018 value of $39.46 billion. The market will continue to increase up to 2024, at an annual average rate of 4.0 percent in value to $49.90 billion. According to the report, key trends for different la- bels include: Pressure-sensitive labels will further increase their market share as government regulations on tracking and barcoding requirements for medical and pharma- ceutical products are implemented. Wet-glue labels, despite losing market share, will see high growth in certain product niches in segments, such as the beer industry in Asia. Multi-part tracking labels market position is be- ing eroded by newer electronic tracking solutions increasingly favored by the logistics industry, such as RFID technology. In-mold labels have a small share of the label print- ing market, but demand is holding steady owing to a growing perception of their eco-friendliness. Shrink labels make up the largest share of the global sleeve market at 90 percent of global volume and are expanding into new areas, including the labelling of beverage cans. The most commonly used print process for labels in 2019 is flexography with a value of $13.3 billion. Flexography has an annual growth of 3.1 percent in value and 4.4 percent. TLMI Opens 2019 Supplier Of The Year Nominations TLMI is actively accepting nominations for its 2019 Supplier To The Year Award, which honors an individ- ual TLMI Supplier Member for their volunteer services and dedication to both TLMI and the tag and label in- dustry. This award is presented to a qualified candidate on an annual basis. Sustainable Goals (Cont’d from Page 1)

the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) found that 86 percent of the close to 100 companies surveyed have either concrete goals or statements of support that ad- dress one or more concepts in sustainable packaging. Many goals center on recyclability, material and vol- ume efficiency, responsible fiber sourcing, eliminating unfavorable materials and using post-consumer recy- cled content and renewable materials. It’s critical to ground ourselves and ask:Why should companies create sustainability goals? There are a host of reasons they should create sustainability goals broadly and sustainable packaging goals specifically. Those range from economic motivators to social and moral drivers. Four of the most important reasons we believe companies should set goals: 1. To get ahead of regulation : Setting and working toward sustainable packaging goals is a great way of setting your company up to meet or exceed regula- tions. In the European Union, companies must comply with ample legislation around packaging. Canada has many provincial-level legislative requirements. In the United States, while a few states are using policy to impact change in packaging,we see a greater presence of cities and municipalities using regulation. 2. To be proactive against reputational risk and los- ing social license : This is a large component of why companies should and do craft sustainable packaging goals. For example, if you know activists target com- panies on deforestation issues, it serves you well to be able to say that you have a goal for responsible fiber sourcing to help demonstrate your commitment to preventing deforestation and removing deforestation from your supply chain.Alternatively, if you know that perceptions around single-use plastics are coming to a boil, it’s valuable to say that your company has been voluntarily working on ways to improve plastic pack- aging in the form of a corporate commitment. 3. To anticipate market changes : Sustainability is now mainstream, driven by millennials and younger generations that are gaining purchasing power. In the most recent Deloitte Millennials survey, almost 40 per- cent of respondents stated that the goal of business should be to “improve society” (second only to “gener- ate jobs” in terms of priorities). There’s also more con- sumer engagement with brands on social media, and more of a demand for transparency, which has a direct impact on packaging. In terms of risk, businesses can- not succeed in a world of environmental, economic and social instability. Companies and some investors today increasingly recognize these risks as threatening supply chains and stable markets for future growth.

Sustainable Goals (Cont’d from Page 5)

4. To do right by the environment : Last, but certainly not least, a critical reason to develop sustainable pack- aging goals is to save the planet, be ethical and do the right thing for its own sake. There are real threats to business and society in terms of climate change im- pacts and availability of resources that affect this and, even moreso, future generations. Forward-looking cor- porations are active corporate citizens, positively af- fecting the future of the planet. It’s clear that it’s becoming more expected for compa- nies to publicly commit to implementing sustainability broadly and sustainable packaging more specifically.Out of the largest 250 companies in the world, 93 percent report publicly on sustainability and 75 percent of mid- and large-cap companies report publicly on sustainability. SPC’s Goals Database includes 640 entries of goals and statements of interest from 100 brands and retail- ers. Of the 640 entries in the database, commitments to more sustainable packaging only account for about half and the other half are broader commitments to sustainability made at the corporate level. Sustainable packaging goals are, as the name sug- gests, more specific to packaging. They include goals around recyclability, material and volume efficiency, re- sponsible fiber sourcing, eliminating unfavorable mate- rials, using post-consumer recycled content and using renewable materials. Implementing Change So, the vast majority of companies are publicly com- mitting to making their packaging more sustainable. While setting goals is a critical first step, we need to take additional steps to ensure that industry commit- ments to sustainable packaging are not just aspiration- al and instead focus on implementation. How might we move the conversation from aspiration to impact? Strategies are different for different goals and also for different companies depending on their corporate culture and how audacious they are. Success stories are out there, but many companies are just beginning to understand strategies for how to implement their sustainable packaging goals. Under the sourcing umbrella, the most popular goal category in the SPC Goals Database was recycled con- tent, which refers to using or increasing the amount of recycled materials in packaging/reducing virgin ma- terials used. The feasibility of incorporating recycled content into various packaging applications depends on many factors such as performance, aesthetic, cost, processing and supply. In the recovery umbrella, the most popular goals in the Goals Database were around designing packaging to be recoverable (recyclable/compostable/reusable).

Flexo’s Future

Katie Graham Marketing and Communications Manager Pamarco As the marketing manager for a major supplier within the packaging industry, I’m on the front lines of what’s happen- ing now and what will be happening soon. It’s my job to help bring us into the

future and I’m here to tell you: the outlook is bright for those who commit to this industry. The horizon is full of advancements in technology and capital spending, not to mention the consumer purchasing habits; these are just a few of the things happening right now that fuel change. Our industry is a bustling, steadily growing market where opportunities abound. Yet, there is a reality that must be addressed: The current core of industry lead- ership is looking to retirement; this means that finding, training and empowering the next generation is critical to provide the human resources to sustain growth. While leaders within the industry today are well-experienced, there is a widening gap that leaves the door wide open for beginners and for workers already in the field. With the promise of a great future, long term job stability, and a clear career path for personal growth, there is potential to spare for a motivated individual. Because of the widening gap between experience and newcomers, however, those in positions of leadership must aggressively focus on developing the next gener- ation of production professionals, skilled machine oper- ators, plant managers, etc. In other words, in order to continue our current course of stable growth and to take hold of the ever-increasing promise for the expanding flexo industry,we need to bridge that gap — technology and capital spending alone won’t get us there. But how can we affect that change? The most important ways that I see this happening are education, collaboration, and in- formation sharing. In terms of education,we can provide details about open positions and general industry infor- mation to local schools as a way to alert potential em- ployees to the wealth of possibilities within our industry. But word of mouth is still the greatest form of support we have to offer — real people sharing real stories with their coworkers, friends and family. This is a close-knit community, so invitations in are a big deal. Collaboration needs to happen through things like conventions or other workforce events that promote bringing together people from all areas of the industry. And we need to increase the opportunities for continued education and information sharing that energize work- place momentum. Our trade torch is burning brightly, but the expertise and experience that lies with the core of its people needs to be handed down to the next generation. Who are you sharing your story with?

according to a new report from MarketsandMarkets. The global corrugated boxes market is driven by fac- tors such as recyclability of corrugated boxes, strong growth in the food & beverage and electronic goods industries, and increase in the spending by consumers for packaged products. Rising e-commerce industry and increasing demand for packed product present a great opportunity for this market to grow in future. The corrugated boxes market is witnessing demand owing to the rise in manufacturing activities. However, factors such as greenhouse gas emission during produc- tion and rising rawmaterial cost inhibit the growth of the market. The flexography Printing segment is estimated to be a leading segment in the corrugated boxes market. Avery Dennison Launches The Future Laboratory Avery Dennison has launched a new original content series called The Future Laboratory. The monthly on- line column, based on proprietary research, provides insights on global drivers, macro and micro trends and their impact on consumers, brands, and the label and packaging industry. In the first release, now available, the column considers blockchain as a way to make labelling data more robust, information transparency more accessible, and ultimately empower consumers about their purchasing decisions. “Product labels have many functions — to be eye-catching and attract attention on the shelf is one, but perhaps the most important function is to inform consumers,”said said researchers atThe Future Labora- tory.“And yet in recent years, the data on labels has left many wanting.Almost half (48 percent) of consumers feel that they do not know enough about a product despite reading the label.” In the new release, The Future Laboratory shows how blockchain, as a distributed digital ledger, can of- fer transparency beyond the label.“...Unlike any other digital database, a blockchain entry cannot be changed once it is logged, giving it a high-trust value,” research- ers said. Blockchain-enabled products offer designers a chance to create engaging, immersive packaging that encourages customers to delve beyond the label and into a brand new world of transparency. “When combined with emerging technologies, a product’s labelling can empower consumers about their purchase decisions, offering new levels of trans- parency,” said Amy White, Vice President, communica- tions and brand,Avery Dennison.“As material science and technology pioneers being up to date on these insights is essential.” AICC Accepting Applications For CEO Advisory Groups AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has opened applications for the leaders of box manufac- turing companies to join CEO Advisory Groups. PS Labels Hold Strong Market Share

in-mold labeling formats in household chemicals. All the label formats are now competing with di- rect-to-package print, in terms of flexible packaging in particular, which is growing strongly in both the developed and emerging markets. An additional competitor is direct digital print to plastic, glass, and metal containers, which offers added brand-owner feature options in terms of limited editioning and personalization. The current focus on sustainability is also favoring renewed growth in printed cartonboard packaging. These alternative technologies are all benefiting from growth rates higher than those for traditional labeling. Apex Adds Manufacturing Capabilities Apex North America has added a 7M ALE Laser En- graving Machine and a 4.5M Full CNC Machine. These machines are unique to Apex allowing precise appli- cation for every engraving Apex offers, including the globally patented GTT2.0, with improved tolerances down to .0002. The latest 7M laser is being added for the high de- mand of customers installing jumbo size presses aimed at corrugated and towel/tissue printing.

According to AWA Alexander Watson Associates’ lat- est research, pressure-sensitive labeling continues to represent a 40 percent share of the global labeling technologies market, while the old-established glue applied technology claims second place, with a 35 percent market share, and the sleeve labeling technol- ogies now represent a solid 19 percent share. In 2018,AWA estimated that worldwide demand for all label types approximated to 64,245 million square meters — a growth of 4.4 percent over 2017 volumes, in line with global GDP. The largest regional market continues to be Asia, with a 44 percent market share, and the leading growth drivers around the world are China, India, South East Asia, and the eastern European countries. VIP labels are a major contributory force, reflecting the increased activity in e-commerce and transpor- tation and logistics. This is particularly true for pres- sure-sensitive labels, which command the majority share of VIP labeling. Sleeve labels — particularly heat-shrink sleeves — continue to provide the main source of competition to pressure-sensitive and glue applied labels in the food and beverage market segments, and also to the

FINAT European Label Forum 2019 Launches New Feature Four relevant topics will be discussed in Copenha- gen, Denmark, at the Converter-only Roundtables, a new feature at the European Label Forum 2019: Sus- tainability & Recycling, Technology Investment, Mar- keting, and NextGen Workforce . These roundtables are an exclusive part of the annual event FINAT for the label industry, which takes place from June 5-7 The Converter Roundtables provide label company owners and managers an opportunity to discuss cur- rent and future challenges and developments with peers from different countries. How are other convert- ers approaching these issues? The four main topics of the new converter round- table feature were chosen based on the results of an online survey among FINAT converter members: Sustainability & recycling Labels and flexible packaging are the “ambassadors of sustainability par excellence” as they are every- where in a consumer’s life. Following the recent pub- lic and EU focus on single-use plastics, might there be a changing attitude toward the sourcing of compos- ite packaging materials by brand-owners and retailer private brands? What are the industry experiences in proactively offering recycling solutions to the market? Technology investment Being able to produce digitally printed labels is more and more becoming a vendor requirement from the part of the brand-owners. Whilst the increasing de- mand for ever shorter runs, variable information and personalised branding is evident, the inherent overca- pacity is also a business risk on top of the investment costs for digital label printing equipment. How are la- bel companies handling this dilemma? Marketing Label procurement is no longer only a matter of personal relationships between buyer and seller. Pro- curement departments have been centralised, being increasingly carried out via electronic tenders. In gen- eral, the way of marketing has changed with the dig- ital world. How are in overall terms label companies adapting their marketing strategy? NextGen Workforce Recruitment and retention of young talent are among the top 3 challenges for business leaders in the Euro- pean label industry. The participants of the roundtable will discuss the industry best practices in bringing in the next generation of talent and what the label in- dustry can do to ensure the alignment of education systems with the changing skillset.
