Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I want to be an athletic trainer because I’ve always loved playing and watching sports and I’ve always been interested in healthcare. I think athletic training is the best way to get both of those things. Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I’ve always wanted to help others in a healthcare setting. The time I spent with athletic trainers in the collegiate setting as an athlete pushed me towards athletic training versus physical therapy. I’m excited to be able to connect to future athletes that I will work with based on my experiences! Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: The athletics department at UWSP has a tight-knit community within the coaches, players and athletic trainers. I wanted to be apart of that environment and learn from some of the best! What setting would you like to work in? Collegiate or professional sports. Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I want to be an athletic trainer because my life has been centered around sports of so long and knowing what it’s like to be injured and pulled away from it makes me want to help those same athletes and give them a sense of closer of what they’re dealing with. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I decided to be in the 3+2 program because it was a faster and economical way to achieve my goal of being an athletic trainer. What setting would you like to work in? My dream athletic training setting is in baseball whether that be with a Triple A team like the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, or in the bigger scope of the MLB. Fun fact: A fun fact about me is that when I was 13, I completed two Spartan races.

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I have always wanted to be in healthcare while maintaining a heavy involvement with sports, which makes athletic training the perfect combination for me! Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I came here for my MS-AT due to the relatively small class size and because of the faculty. I’ve had previous friends in the program that stated they were extremely helpful with their course studies! What setting would you like to work in? Collegiate or professional. Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I always knew that whatever career path I ended up taking I wanted to work with and help athletes so becoming an AT is a perfect fit. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose to come to UWSP because I was already familiar with the campus, and I knew the professors from undergrad and knew that I liked their teaching styles and how they build relationships with their students. Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I had ATCs in the past who saw past the injury I had. They cared about my mental health and who I was as a person, which is how I hope to help my patients in the future. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UWSP because the area is great, the athletics here are close-knit and it feels like family! What setting would you like to work in? Professional basketball. BREANNA SCHNELL ’26

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I grew up playing sports my entire life, so I have always loved the game atmosphere. I love the adrenaline rush and the excitement. Now that I am on the sideline, I get a taste of that even though I am no longer competing in a sport. Also, I have gone through two knee surgeries in college due to sports so I have spent countless hours in the training room seeing what my future could look like. Someday I will be able to relate to my patients and I cannot wait! Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose the MS-AT program here at Point because it felt like home, and I didn’t want to transfer for my master’s. Also, the 3+2 program made it easier! What setting would you like to work in? Collegiate. Fun fact: I grew up on a farm back in little Bonduel. As soon as I could walk, I showed horses, swine, and later on dogs.

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: Playing sports has been a huge part of my life. Being an athletic trainer, I would get to continue my passion for sports and share it with others. My dream is to help athletes stay healthy and continue on with their passions as well. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UWSP because I had family members who attended, and this persuaded me into attending as well. I also loved the area as it felt like a home away from home. Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I had a very good relationship with my high school athletic training and that really inspired me to follow in her footsteps and become an AT as well. She really knew how to listen to all her athletes and was able to support us all on and off the field. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UWSP because I had made great connections with my professors from the first day on campus. I was in Intro to Athletic Training and Danelle Smith was my professor. I walked out of her class the first week of classes so confident that I wanted to eventually be in the athletic training program one day. As I continued in my undergraduate program, I met the rest of the athletic training program professors and all of them were amazing and so helpful. They are the main reason I chose UWSP for my master’s degree. What setting would you like to work in? Professional football. Fun fact: I am planning my wedding for June 2025!

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? Other than using a Wet a bulb, my favorite experience while being an MS-AT student as to be the appreciation that we receive from the teams and players. Often time we are overlooked and not thought of from a fan’s perspective. The teams ensure we are well taken care; this proven time and time again. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? One piece of advice, I would give someone looking to join our MS-AT program would be to develop a study habit early. There is a lot of information that is thrown at you, especially in

the first year, and understanding how to study the material is important so that you can retain the material and use it in clinicals. You can never study too much!

Where do you want to work in the future? My goal is to work at a high school in either Central or Eastern Wisconsin.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? One interesting fact I learned while in class was the entire inflammation process. All eight steps, from the injury to phagocytosis.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience has been the support and hands-on learning through our close-knit classes. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? My best advice is to not take it for granted. Be ready to try everything and develop who you are as a person. Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work for the military setting in some way.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? 1) Signs and symptoms from a concussion are a result of energy deficit. 2) A urinalysis is needed before competing in wrestling to ensure proper hydration of athletes.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience in the MS-AT program was my first rotation at SPASH. It was during this time that I gained confidence in my abilities while working under an incredible preceptor, Jackie Burner. This experience remains one of the most memorable and has played a significant role in shaping me into the athletic trainer I aspire to become. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program?

If you’re looking to explore all areas of athletic training, UWSP is the place for you. Having experienced other programs, like ASU, I can confidently say that UWSP stands out for the way it allows you to shape your own career path with the guidance and support of dedicated professors. The opportunities and flexibility here are truly unique, and you won’t find a program like this anywhere else.

Where do you want to work in the future? Somewhere in healthcare administration or in a clinic.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? In the world of athletic training, there is something for everyone, and you just need to find your place within the profession.

Where do you want to work in the future? I find passion in positions centered around community; with this I see myself in a small high school or working with tactical athletes of police and fire/EMS departments.

It has been extremely fun being a student- athlete while in the MS-AT program because I can still relate to these athletes in ways no other student can. This allows me to think and act out of my comfort zone which teaches me new ways to continue to grow. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Don’t do the bare minimum, try to grow every day as a person and always have a healthy mentality. Always surround yourself around successful individuals that work hard, those are people that will build a bright future for you and themselves.

The event staff is always a hoot to talk to and it is a great event to apply your communication skills with patients of all ages. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone … you never know what opportunities (especially if our professors have any say in the matter) it might bring you. Where do you want to work in the future? Collegiate or high school setting.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Athletic trainers are not permitted to fire cup in the state of Wisconsin.

With a men’s hockey team at the juniors, D1 or professional level. What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Beth did not know how to play Thunderstruck.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience so far was reducing an athlete’s shoulder. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? If you are looking to join the UWSP MS-AT program my advice to you is to review and keep reviewing your anatomy. Knowing the muscles’ origin and insertion points can make your first and second year of classes a lot easier. Where do you want to work in the future? Collegiate football.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? One interesting fact that I found out during classes is that the lunate, one of your carpal bones, can pop completely out of your skin with enough force.

Make sure you find an effective way to study for yourself. Also don’t be afraid to ask for help. Where do you want to work in the future? Professional baseball or collegiate sports.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? If an athlete gets an open wound on their head, you can use a swimming cap to cover it.

I have been able to gain new skills that may not be taught in the classroom. Learning about their experiences have better prepared me for what I will encounter after graduating. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? My advice for someone looking to join the MS- AT program is to ask questions and follow up with more questions. Take every opportunity to learn. Make sure to introduce yourself to everyone and create relationships; make connections! Where do you want to work in the future? I would like to work in the collegiate setting.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? One interesting fact I learned while in class is 2-10% of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy. The risk increases as you get older.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience with the program so far has been my clinical experiences. I have gotten to work with a lot of very cool people, and I have had an amazing time working with so many different athletes. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? My best advice for someone looking to join the program is that you have to love working with people. Whether it be with your fellow students, preceptors, athletic trainers or especially with your athletes. You are always working with many different people.

Where do you want to work in the future? I would love to end up with a professional football team in the future. There is so much opportunity that the NFL holds, and it would be amazing to work with the best football athletes in the entire world. What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? One interesting fact I have learned in class is that if you do not know your anatomy, then you probably will not do very well.

ABOUT THE UW-STEVENS POINT ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM The athletic training program at UW-Stevens Point is committed to serving students seeking national certification in athletic training. The MS-AT program will strive to incorporate effective teaching strategies, hands-on learning, the latest technologies, and mentorship to prepare students to excel as athletic training professionals. The MS-AT program will provide a collaborative, responsible, student-centered and experiential learning environment, which will produce students who are passionate and productive athletic trainers, critical thinking lifelong learners, and ambassadors for cooperative and effective health care for active individuals.
