Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I always had great athletic trainers who were there to help when I needed, and I would like to do the same for other athletes when they need it. I also like the idea of being part of a team and in a team atmosphere. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I came to UWSP to play football and from day 1 it felt like home. I met all of my grad professors in undergrad and had a few like Kelsey and Brock as my trainers while playing football. I always felt like part of the family so I never wanted to go to another grad program. What setting would you like to work in? Working with a college football team. Fun fact: I played football for five years at UWSP.

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I never want to be away from athletics. I grew up with sports and competition and I don’t ever think I’ll be able to get away from it. I want to be able to keep athletes healthy, rehabilitate the injured ones to get them back into competition, and make sure they all can keep performing at their best. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: UWSP is my alma mater, and I have developed good relationships with the MS-AT instructors, students and student-athletes. What setting would you like to work in? Professional baseball or basketball. Fun fact: I’ve known I wanted to get into athletic training since 8th grade.

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I was someone who was in the training room with a few major injuries and my ATs helped me get through them and that made me want to go and do what they did for me for someone else. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose Point because it is not too far from home and everyone here was so welcoming. What setting would you like to work in? College. Fun fact: I played softball for 17 years including the college level.

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I want to be an athletic trainer because it allows me to combine my passion for sports with my desire to help others. I love the idea of being hands on in injury prevention, recovery and positively supporting athletes through some of their toughest moments and contributing to their success on and off the field. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UW-Stevens Point because the athletic training program stood out to me for the hands-on clinical experience early on, along with the close relationships I have made with the amazing professors who have pushed me through not only the master’s but my undergraduate as well. The campus felt like a great fit for me personally, as it is the right size and has a sense of community.

From my own experiences in sports, I’ve seen how much injuries can impact both performance and confidence. Being able to support someone through recovery and see them return to what matters most to them is what motivates me to pursue this career. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UWSP because it feels like home to me. Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I aspire to become an athletic trainer because sports have always been an important part of my life. Growing up, I not only played but also enjoyed watching sports, which fueled my passion for athletics. From an early age, I knew I wanted to work with athletes and support them in reaching their full potential. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UWSP because it is close to home, and I had the professors during my undergraduate studies. Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I grew up playing sports all throughout my youth, so I have had a lot of exposure to athletic trainers, and I have always been super intrigued by what they do. Along with that I love being around sports nothing beats the atmosphere of being at a game. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose this school because I did my four years of undergrad here, and I fell in love with the area. Also the small cohorts help to create a collaborative and healthy learning environment. What setting would you like to work in? I would love to work for a D1 college.

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: My passion for becoming an athletic trainer comes from my desire to help people during their most challenging moments. I’m excited by the opportunity to support individuals through injury and recovery, helping them return to the activities they love. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UW-Stevens Point because my athletic trainer from high school went to UWSP, as well as my sister. They turned out to be not only great at what they do, but also great people. What setting would you like to work in? My dream athletic training setting is one where I am working with an NFL team or with PGA Tour players. Fun fact: I can tell you where almost any NFL player from the 2010s to the present day went to college.

Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I want to be an athletic trainer because it combines my interest in health science, my drive to help others and my love for sports into one profession. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: I chose UW-Stevens Point because I heard a lot of good things about the MS-AT program from my peers and advisers, as well as the campus being closer to home. My favorite experience that I have had so far in the program was when I traveled with the women’s basketball team for the first time to Eau Claire. It was their senior night, and they were leading the whole game until with no time on the clock one of the girls hit the craziest buzzer beater three-pointers to win the game. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? If you like watching sports, this is a great career for you.

Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work in a professional setting either with hockey or soccer.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? If you like work to be different every day and fast pace is something that may interest you, this is the career. Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work for a professional basketball team or higher D1 school.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? One interesting fact that I learned while in class is that Carter DOES NOT KNOW WHAT SHARING IS (DID NOT LET ANYONE HAVE ANY PIZZA ON THE FIRST DAY OF OUR SECOND YEAR).

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience that I have had so far in the program is working with all the different athletes across all my rotations so far. Both the players and my preceptors have made it a lot of fun to be a part of this program. A specific experience that has been my favorite so far was watching the USD Coyotes beat Drake 42-21. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? It’s a fun program; you get out of it what you put in.

Where do you want to work in the future? I would like to work with an NFL team, but I also like the idea of working with a Division 1 college football team. What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? There is such a thing as a cabbage soup diet. They are very strict about when you can eat bananas and baked potatoes.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience that I have had so far in the program was when I worked with Amherst High School. We were undefeated going into their homecoming game. They were down by 1 and went to kick a field goal to win it, but they had a bad snap, causing the ball to get away from them. The kicker picked up the ball and passed it into the end zone. It ricocheted off a defender’s hand into the arms of our wide receiver, who’s known for dropping passes, and won the game with a touchdown.

What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? It’s a great career for those who like sports but also enjoy helping others in need. Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work in a professional setting, preferably baseball, but if I choose to change in the future, hockey.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Know your anatomy.

My favorite experience so far while being in the program has been the relationships that I have made with my classmates, preceptors, doctors, PTs and athletes! What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? The MS-AT program has been a blast and extremely fulfilling, the professors and preceptors are excellent! One word of advice would be to jump in and get uncomfortable cause that will increase your confidence tremendously.

Where do you want to work in the future? I can see myself working at a large high school or at a university working with soccer, volleyball or hockey. What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Most people think you’re speaking a different language when you say “Sustentaculum Tali.”

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience so far while being in the MS-AT program was when I got to watch an athlete, I had worked with a lot, return and play in their first game after being out for almost two years due to injury. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Be prepared to learn a lot at a fast pace, but don’t be afraid to ask questions. Even when it feels like a lot, everyone around you is there to support you, and you have a lot of resources available to you, so make sure to use them!

Where do you want to work in the future? I would like to work at the collegiate level in the future.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Something interesting that I’ve learned in class is how to test the sensory and motor functions for different nerves.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience so all of the pre-game excitement especially with UWSP men’s hockey. The energy and the craziness the guys have is really something interesting. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Be open minded about what sport you want to work with because I have worked with different sports that I ended up liking a lot more than I thought.

Where do you want to work in the future? The plan is to work for a university or a bigger high school like Division 3 or higher. The true ultimate goal is to work for a pro or a semi pro team.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? A disqualifying condition from all sports is carditis.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience that I have had so far in the program has been working with the football team this fall. The athletes, my preceptor Kelsey and my fellow student ATs have been such a great group to work with/ be a part of. They make all the days more enjoyable. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Be a sponge! Absorb everything and ask a lot of questions! Our preceptors love to teach and show us their skills, and it is awesome to learn from them.

Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work at a collegiate level, and I am open to any sports at the moment! What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Ice is mostly a placebo effect and can slow down healing processes if not applied right away after an injury.

Being able to move to Colorado Springs and do a clinical with the United States Air Force Academy and work with men’s and women’s basketball. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Be open to new experiences and opportunities. If you have the chance to go to a different state for a clinical, do it! You are only in graduate school once. Ask lots of questions and be involved in everything you can while in clinicals! The clinical experience is what you make of it. Learn as much as you can and take on every experience you can!

Where do you want to work in the future? The goal is to eventually work within a military setting, but as a new graduate I want to be at a bigger high school or a D3 college.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Athletic trainers can work in a variety of settings!

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experiences have been working hands-on with the basketball and football team. I remember traveling to Oshkosh with the basketball team last year and how exciting and close that game was. Mak (the head trainer) and I learned a lot together working with the team and we were so invested in this game! Also, when I was working the first football game this year, we went into overtime and took the win. This was intense for my first game but seeing how happy the players were was worth it. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? This career has so many opportunities and it is so different than a 9-5 desk job if that is not what you like! If you work hard to learn human physiology, you will love your job.

Where do you want to work in the future? I would like to work at a college for a few years or at a large high school. Once I have my own family to take care of, I hope to transition to a clinic. What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Icing does not solve all your problems; there are so many other beneficial modalities.

What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Always bring energy to the ATF every day. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work in a professional or college baseball setting.

What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? How the inflammatory process is like the Chicago Bears organization.

What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? My advice is to jump on any opportunity you can to learn or practice your skills in your first year. It will help you be more prepared to take on larger roles in your second year and help prepare you for after graduation. Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work with football at the college and professional level.

What has been your favorite experience while being in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience so far while being in the program has been with fall football. The other students that are with football are fantastic. We have a great bond that has helped on the hard days, encouraging and keeps me laughing. What advice would you give someone that’s looking to join our MS-AT program? Talk with athletic trainers that you have had in the past or at the university and hear their why. They can give you the encouragement that you need to start in the program. Everyone at UWSP wants to see you excel in this field of work.

Where do you want to work in the future? I want to work in a college or high school setting. If I work in the college setting, I would like to work with football or gymnastics. What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? One interesting fact that I learned is that sometimes an injury might present as one thing, but as time goes on it can change to be something else.

ABOUT THE UW-STEVENS POINT ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM The athletic training program at UW-Stevens Point is committed to serving students seeking national certification in athletic training. The MS-AT program will strive to incorporate effective teaching strategies, hands-on learning, the latest technologies, and mentorship to prepare students to excel as athletic training professionals. The MS-AT program will provide a collaborative, responsible, student-centered and experiential learning environment, which will produce students who are passionate and productive athletic trainers, critical thinking lifelong learners, and ambassadors for cooperative and effective health care for active individuals.
