5 Things To Do Old Jasper District Located along the Patoka River in the heart of Jasper, also known as the “Old Jasper” district, the area is filled with history, vitality, and serenity! Historic attractions to enjoy in this area include:
THE SPIRIT OF JASPER TRAIN & DEPOT All aboard the Spirit of Jasper train for a scenic excursion on three beautifully renovated, climate-controlled lounge cars complete with restrooms, comfortable seating, and a cash bar. THE JASPER CITY MILL Constructed to resemble the former mill that once stood near the Patoka River, tour the Jasper City Mill, watch the workings of the waterwheel and corn meal production, and browse the souvenir items in the gift shop.
RIVERWALK & PLAZA A popular 2-mile-long trail along the Patoka River that walkers, bikers, and runners enjoy. This safe trail passes through beautiful wooded areas, along farm fields, by a children’s park and through a plaza area that features shelter houses, horseshoe pits, picnic areas and a gazebo.

A historic hand-hewn log structure that was reassembled in the “old jasper” district to allow guests to rent for events and popular for a photography backdrop.
THYEN-CLARK CULTURAL CENTER The newest addition to the “Old Jasper” district, the Thyen-Clark Cultural Center features three art galleries, private studios, workshop space, an event center, black box theater and is the home for the Jasper Community Arts & Jasper Public Library. ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE The Alexander School was built in 1918 and was relocated to the “Old Jasper” District in 2021 to preserve the history of a one-room schoolhouse, which was prevalent in Dubois County into the 20th century. Tour the school house and learn about the Wilson Family, a local family that contributed to the community and school system.
RIVER CENTRE Recently completed in 2020, the River Centre is expected to be the hub of downtown activity in Jasper featuring a Brewery, local café, a fitness facility and houses a variety of sizes of loft apartments available for lease. LABYRNTH A symbol of unity, wholeness and transformation for heart, mind, body & spirit. Located off 4th street and along the River Walk, the beautiful winding path can be contemplative, resulting in physical & emotional healing.
Monastery Immaculate Conception Known as the “Castle on the Hill”, the Monastery, founded in 1867, is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Benedictine women. The distinctive, recently-restored Romanesque dome, rises majestically over the town of Ferdinand, standing at 87 feet from the floor and 32 and a half feet in diameter. Throughout the church, 89 angels are present, 16 of which are depicted on the stained glass windows surrounding the dome. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. The Monastery gift shop offers handmade crafts from the sisters and other unique spiritual merchandise along with treats from Monastery Baked Goods. The new Hospitality Center, also on the Monastery grounds, offers a peaceful and rejuvenating getaway. League Stadium Built in 1894 and renovated in the early 1990s, this historic stadium served as home field for the Rockford Peaches in the filming of the hit motion picture, “A League of Their Own”, featuring Tom Hanks and Madonna. Original advertisements from the film remain along the outfield fence. The stadium also starred in the HBO movie, “Soul of the Game.” In the summer, enjoy an evening rooting for the Dubois County Bombers. The Bombers are a collegiate wood bat baseball team featuring players from college rosters throughout the United States. During Bombers games, Peaches are in the stadium helping everyone have a great time while watching great baseball.

Located on Newton Street, the Dubois County Museum is a museum that is dedicated to preserving and presenting the heritage and history of Dubois County in Indiana. With 50,000 square feet of exhibit space displaying more than 36,000 objects, the Dubois County Museum is by far the largest county museum in Indiana and one of the top Jasper attractions. The museum features a reconstructed 1890s main street, a model train display, a log house built in 1850, and much more. Visitors learn about the plants and animals of the area, the history of the early settlers consisting of Germans and Scots-Irish, and more. The museum offers guided tours and is open from Tuesday through Sunday. Sultan’s Run Golf Club

Getting Settled Incentive Program A new relocation incentive program, Choose Southern Indiana, is offering qualified applicants a $5,000 incentive to move to Dubois or Orange counties. Radius Indiana, in coordination with Dubois Strong and the Orange County Economic Development Partnership, is offering the pilot program to qualified out-of-state individuals or families who are willing to relocate and remain in the area of at least two years.

The Dubois County Solid Waste Management District’s Process Center accepts many items not accepted at the county recycling sites. Items include: TVs, computers, e-waste and small appliances, fluorescent bulbs, paint, household hazardous waste (HHW), flammables, used cooking oil, scrap metals, large items such as couches and mattresses. Most items require a fee from $.25 to $20. The Center is available for use by Dubois County residents, agencies, organizations and small businesses. Residents are responsible for unloading items brought to the Process Center.
