Ellie leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. “You know, there’s a guy here—Cameron Wallace, but everyone calls him Cam. He’s got a background in security and helps resi- dents install cameras and such. I’d be happy to introduce you.” Kat considered the offer. Security equip- ment wasn’t a bad idea, especially given the odd chill and the voice she’d heard. “That would be great. Thank you.” Ellie pulled out her phone. “Here, let me give you, my number. You never know when you might need a friend around here.” Kat smiled, unlocking her phone and tap- ping in Ellie’s number as she recited it. “I’ll ring you really quick, so you have mine too.” A second later, Ellie’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and saved Kat’s num- ber with a satisfied nod. “And don’t let those pool ladies scare you off,” Ellie added with a grin as she stood. “This place is full of good people once you get to know them.” Kat leaned back, letting the sun warm her skin as she watched the poolside cliques gos- siping across the deck. Maybe Ellie was right—there were better things to focus on than who controlled which lounge chair. Still, a nagging feeling lingered, as faint and unsettling as the voice she had heard that morning.
