YE SEE THE DAY APPROACHING (Continued from Page 73)
“Best” Books
the present day— all which are symptomatic of our times— indicate th a t the w itness for Christ is almost, if not en tirely, complete. IV.— THE UPHEAVAL OF THE WORLD POINTS TO THE NEAR APPROACH OF THAT DAY. As signs of His advent, our Lord instanced days of ven geance and terro r, g reat distress upon the land, and on the sea the ro ar of m ighty billows. He said th a t men would fain t for fear and for expectation of th e things coming on the e a rth ; th a t the sun would be darkened, and th a t the mioon would not give her light, and th a t the stars would fall from heaven; th a t nation should rise against nation, and kingdom against kifigdom, and th a t we should hear of wars and rum ors of wars. He added th at, when we saw these things coming to pass, we were to lift up our heads and rejoice, because our redemption would be nigh. Who shall deny the relevance of these words, in th e ligh t of the g reat est war in history, which spread from land to land w ith the swiftness of a prairie-fire? The d ark est hour preceeds the dawn. The Saviour waits till the fou rth watch of the night ere He steps down on the angry w aters and approaches the storm -swept boat th reatened w ith disaster. The perilous tim es of th e last days are surely upon this generation, which cannot pass until the d istan t roll of His chariot-wheels announces th a t the King is on His way. t j — THE GREAT INCREASE OF SPIRITUALISM IS ALSO SIGNIFICANT. In the Apocalyptic figure, th ree unclean spirits like frogs issue out of the mouth of th e dragon, th e beast, and the false prophet. The Seer gives the in terp retation th a t they are the spirits of demons working miracles. Of late a cloud of d ark spirits has darkened the a ir; millions have been seduced into listening to th eir whisperings, and among them, multitudes of nom inal Christians. It is extraordinary th a t those who profess the name of Christ should have deal ings w ith spirits of demons who impersonate th eir kindred and friends. They are m anifestly dealing w ith th e lowest dregs of th e spirit-world,, who eith er cannot or will not, disentangle themselves from the earth-sphere. But it is well worthy of notice th a t in th e very next sentence the Lord says: “Behold, I come as a th ief,” as though He had said: “When this comes to pass, be sure to watch and keep your garm ents, because I shall be n ear.” Probably we m ight also quote th e rem arkable chrono logical coincidences which the advocates of th e year-day system can recite; and the eager looking for the coming of the Lord, which is becoming the a ttitu d e of myriads of believers.. There never were such multitudes as now who are trimm ing th e ir lamps in anticipation of th e Lord’s ap proach. The lightning flash of the Advent y ill encircle the world in an instant. Here it will be night— “ two men in one bed.” There it will be tw ilight— “ two women shall be grinding tog eth er” for the morning meal. Yonder it will be m idday “ two shall be in the field.”- But everywhere th e same greeting will spring to our lips: “Lo, th is is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us; th is is the Lord, we shall be glad and rejoice in His salvation.” '
