L’ORIGNAL | If anyone anywhere in Prescott-Russell calls 911 for help they can be sure to get someone to talk to them in either English or French as needed. Michel Chrétien, emergency servic- es director for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) has an answer back from the OPP’s municipal policing bureau (MPB) about questions from the United Counties and its member munic- ipalities about present and future 911 service. “I am quite satisfied,”Chrétien told the UCPR council during a recent meeting. One of the main concerns for the coun- ties council and municipal councils in the UCPR was whether or not Prescott- Russell’s francophone majority could be sure to get 911 service in French and not have situations where a resident with a weak or no grasp of English had to deal with a 911 dispatcher who spoke no French. “The OPP can confirm the ability to respond in French,” stated Sgt. Mike Mil- ner in the MPB letter. “As per OPP policy all 911 calls are initially addressed in English. However, there are personnel on staff within the North Bay Provincial

was arrested April 16 in connection with a month-old theft. It is alleged that March 27, he removed a large amount of copper from a Bound- ary Road business at the eastern edge of Cornwall. He was charged with theft over $5,000 and released to appear in court May 7.

HAWKESBURY| In the week of April 15 to 22, Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to 243 occur- rences and laid 17 charges. Officers investigated six thefts and two assaults. Six RIDE initiatives were con- ducted. There was one impaired driving charge laid. Impaired driving charge Saturday, April 21, shortly after mid- night, officers stopped a 2004 Hyundai Accent on Main Street, Hawkesbury. So- phie Racine, 32, of Lachute, was charged with driving while her blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. She was later released on a promise to appear in court May 15 in L’Orignal. Shoplifting incident April 19, a shoplifting incident at the Walmart store in Hawkesbury was report- ed. The investigation revealed that a store “loss prevention officer” had detained someone for allegedly shoplifting. Francis
