A swap meet success story in Russell COMMUNAUTÉ• COMMUN I TY

through the doors. The $10 admission fee gave everyone the right to walk out again with as much or as little as they wanted, de- pending on whether they found something to pique their interest, tickle their fancy, or fill a need. «They take as much stuff as they want going out,» said Houle, smiling. «There was no limit to what you could take. Some people leave with a bag full, some with a box full, some need a van to carry away all their stuff.» Most swapmeet shoppers come to browse the tables. A few hope to find unexpected surprises hidden among the jumble. «We had a few antique pieces, including a desk,» said Houle, «and quite a few home decor items. We had snowshoes that were almost brand-new, and guitars that just nee- ded a few strings replaced. Some of it (swap shopping) is treasure hunting. Some of it is a blast from the past discovery. Lots of things can get a new, unexpected life.» The society’s profit from the swap meet helps fund its various projects like the MacDougall Park flower beds plantings or the Children’s Fantasy Reading Garden at the library, along with various workshops for members, and the ReLeaf Plant a Tree project the society has in partnership with Beyond the House, a local nursery.

Everyone likes a bargain and there were plenty for everyone, along withmore than a few fantastic finds for «treasure hunters» at theThird Annual Swap-It-Out SwapMeet at St.Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School over the March 28 weekend. The Russell and District Horticultural Societymade its annual offer of «spring clea- ning» help for residents with lots of stuff cluttering up their basements, attics, and garages but impatient to wait for garage sale weather to finally arrive. The annual swap shop has proven a very popular commu- nity social event and also very profitable for the society’s own beautification programs around the village and other projects. It’s even helped to boost the society’s mem- bership ranks just a little. «People were waiting to come in at 9:30 in the morning,» said Louise Houle, swap meet organizer, «which is usually when we let our own (society) members through for a quick browse. Some people who wanted to get in at that time thought it was worthwhile to buy a society membership.» Themorning rush-hour crowd poured in

A book-lover browses one of the tables groaning beneath the weight of paperbacks and hardcovers at the swap meet.

Even the mayor likes to go to swap meets. Here Pierre Leroux (left) and horticultural society president Marcel Beauchamp chat during a brief lull.

Une bonne coupe. Au bon moment. A great cut. At the right time.
