Len Cuthbert’s Lawrence Station: The Flagship Erie’s Final Flight by Peri Hayes Fridge Door Live Theatre Company presents Len Cuthbert’s Lawrence Station: The Flagship Erie’s Final Flight. Based in Mount Brydges, this inspired creative shares the moment which prompted this production. During his cycling for cancer journey, Len’s route led him to Lawrence Station. Being that Len would write a blog following each ride, he began researching this nook of the Earth when he learned of the Flagship Erie -- a fatal plane crash involving 17 passengers and three crew members. With Len’s background in aviation and passion for history, he embarked on his artistic process. Len was able to connect with a gentleman named Ken, presently 90 years old. “His father’s farm is where this tragedy happened; he was five years old at the time,” Len voices. “I am grateful that people were on board [with the project] and that there is so much material available; it took off from there.” These informative sources include the authentic newspaper clippings following the crash, which Ken’s mother had stored. Moreover, the late Robert Schweyer’s Final Descent: The Loss of the Flagship Erie has been a valuable text. Robert’s wife, Cindy Schweyer, ensures that copies are available for $20.00 cash at these showings. With the first production in 2023, this play is now returning with updates for the 85th anniversary of the 1941 devastation — including live music composed by Len’s son and talented musician, Fynn Cuthbert. “While sombre surrounding the crash, this play is a mix of comedy and drama which people seem to appreciate.” Len placed focus on sharing this story from the female perspective, for which an impressive three actors from the surrounding area C
will be portraying over 40 characters. As Len continues, “This play addresses how this crash affected families and community members -- people’s lives changed instantly.” Audience members have travelled near and far to hear this story of local history, as Len offers, “I aim for three things in my storytelling: to inspire, inform, and influence. The most rewarding experience is when people can connect with the story in some way. I am grateful for all of the support.” Experience Lawrence Station: The Flagship Erie’s Final Flight this October 29th to 30th with 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm showings. It is important to note that the 85th anniversary is on October 30th. Located at the Southwold Keystone Complex (35921 Talbot Line), this production is in collaboration with Elgin County, Green Lane Community Trust, Southwold Township History Committee and the Township of Southwold.
