Sloan Helps Find the Right Stone for Your Home Stone countertops have become a sought-after feature in kitchens and bathrooms, valued for their beauty, durability and ability to transform a space. At Sloan Stone Design, homeowners can explore several options, including quartz, granite, marble, quartzite and porcelain, each offering its own advantages. “Stone has become the standard we see in most homes today,” says Jessica Desrosiers, Design Consultant and Assistant Sales Manager at Sloan Stone Design. “Everyone wants the look and durability of stone over other alternatives such as a laminate surface.” A stone countertop can also breathe new life into an existing room without requiring a complete renovation. Jessica says Sloan Stone Design regularly replaces older countertops while keeping the existing cabinetry, creating a fresh look for the kitchen or bathroom. Choosing the right material begins with understanding how the space will be used. Homeowners should consider whether they regularly place hot pots and pans on the counter, cook with ingredients that may stain or occasionally cut food without using a cutting board. “You really need to know how you are going to abuse your kitchen to know the best product choice for you,” Jessica says. “Quartz, natural stone and porcelain will each give you a different set of pros and cons to consider.” Quartz is a manufactured product made by combining natural stone elements with resins. The manufacturer creates its colours

and patterns, providing consistency from one slab to another. Quartz is durable and easy to maintain, making it a practical choice for busy households. Porcelain can be extremely resistant to heat and scratching, with some products able to withstand temperatures of up to 1,500 degrees. Its appearance is created using a photograph of natural stone, giving it a realistic look while offering impres- sive performance. Natural stones, including granite, marble, and quartzite, are mined from the earth, then cut into slabs and polished or leathered. Every slab reflects the conditions under which the stone was formed, giving it distinctive colours, movement and patterning. “The uniqueness and qualities of a natural stone countertop truly cannot be duplicated,” Jessica says. Quartzite has become an especially popular option, although it is frequently confused with quartz. Unlike manufactured quartz, quartzite is natural stone, similar to granite or marble. It offers much of the soft, elegant appearance associated with marble but is generally easier to maintain. “Each quartzite slab is one of a kind, whereas quartz is the same pattern time and time again,” Jessica explains. For homeowners, that means the countertop selected for their home will be genuinely unique. “You will always be getting something that nobody else has,” Jessica says. “I think that is a really special thing to have as part of your home.” Whether you are planning a complete renovation or simply giving your existing kitchen or bathroom a fresh look, the team at Sloan Stone Design can help you find a countertop that fits your space, style and everyday needs.
