Fisherman has a tale to tell

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Sean Foster just wanted to catch a nice bass or two. Instead, he found himself in a fight with a big fish without a net to help land his catch. Foster and a couple of friends were out for a Sunday fishing jaunt over the August 16 weekend in the shallow area of a small bay on the Ottawa River close to the highway across fromwhere the Rockland OPP station is located. The site, nicknamed “OPP Bay as we call it,” said Foster, is a popular spot for anglers. “We were bass fishing,” said Foster, about the plan for the day. “And that’s what made it so funny. We were in three feet of water and I was using a buzzbait (lure).” The “buzzbait” is a spinner type of lure with a small propeller that swirls around as the lure drags over the top of the water. It is meant to act like a wounded minnow or other type of food favourite for bass. Foster hadn’t been fishing for more than a quarter of an hour that morning, spinning his lure out into the weeds trying to tempt a bass when a fourteen-pound muskie hit the line first. After reeling the fish in, admiring it, and taking its measurements, he released the muskie back into the river and resumed trying to lure a bass. “Then, there was a great big boil in the water,” he said, as an even bigger muskie took the lure in its mouth and tried to take off with it. “She slammed the bait,” Foster said, “and the fight was on.” After close to half an hour’s fighting, and with the help of his friends because he didn’t have a net, Foster managed to drag a huge muskie out of the river and into his boat. After taking its measurements, the muskie proved to be 56 inches in length and weighed in at 37 pounds. “It was a surprise to see such a big fish in so little water,” said Foster. After getting a photo of his surprise catch, Foster released the big fish back into the river. Now he wonders what luck he’ll have on his next bass fishing trip along the shores of Rockland. The club signed up Sylvain Favreau as its new director of hockey operations and Marc Franche has moved up fromassistant coach to the new head coach for the team. Before the start of the 2015-2016 season in the Central Canada Hockey League, Grads coaching staff have been reviewing appli- cants during the summer tryouts camp and making changes in the roster from last year. The club traded veteran Travis Douglas to Kemptville in exchange for Shawn Cameron and Jacob Hould. Chandler Watson and Étienne Vivash have gone to Hawkesbury while Brandon Zullo is nowwith Pembroke. New additions to the Grads bench include defenseman Benoît Villeneuve fromNepean and forward Dexter John from Brockville. Coming in fromQuébec for the forward line are brothers Michael and Raphael Larose. Grads prep The Cumberland Grads have undergone a makeover for the start of the junior A hockey season.

Sean Foster holds up with pride his surprise catch of the day during a Sunday fishing trip. The monster-sized muskie was then released back into the Ottawa River to live and fight another day.
