Walmart Launches Sustainability Playbook by Greg Kishbaugh R etail giant Walmart recently hosted its annual Sustainable Packaging Summit, using the event to launch its new Wal- mart Sustainable Packaging Playbook, which updates the com- pany’s sustainable packaging goals. The Playbook provides guidance to brand-owner vendors, pri- vate-label manufacturers and packaging suppliers on the ways in which they can improve the score of their sustainability index and lower costs.

DiTrolio Flexo Institute Closes

DiTrolio Flexographic Institute, Broadview, Illinois, has been forced to close down, 17 years after open- ing its doors. Company founder Vince DiTrolio started the school as a way to introduce highly skilled and trained operators into the flexo- graphic industry, a topic of utmost importance. DiTrolio remains grateful for the support the school received from the industry, but it was not enough to counteract serious budget cuts from the state of Illinois that helped the school operate. After years of accumulating publi- cations, re-acquiring books, journals, and conference papers, as well as completing more than a year of re- organizing and cataloging, TAPPI an- nounced that its Information Resource Library has re-opened as a means for members to explore, pe- ruse and research. The library titles can be viewed at www.library- thing.com/catalog/TAPPILibrary . For exclusive content and breaking news please visit www.flexomarketnews.com TAPPI Re-Opens Resource Library

The Playbook is broken down into three pillars to improve and refine a company’s environmental policies. Source Sustainably : maximize recycled and sustainably- sourced renewable content, while enhancing the health of the materials they use in their packaging. Optimize Design : find ways to reduce unnecessary packag- ing materials, such as extra boxes, ties or layers, while main- taining what is necessary to protect the product. Support Recycling : increase use of recyclable content, while working to improve infrastructure for hard-to-recycle (Cont’d on Page 8 )

Bobst K5 Expert Unveiled At Manchester Open House More than 80 visitors from around the world at- tended this year’s Bobst Manchester Open House held at its Competence Centre on October 18. The event saw the world premiere of the new Bobst K5 Expert metallizer. The Bobst K5 Expert can run at speeds up to 1,200 meters per minute, is available in widths from 2,450 mm to 3, 650 mm and can house increased roll diam- eters of up to 1,270 mm to meet new industry trends for improved productivity. Demand for pressure sensitive tapes in the Asia/Pacif- ic region is projected to increase 5.3 percent per year to 28.3 billion square meters in 2020, according to a new report fromThe Freedonia Group. Growth will be boosted by continued economic ex- pansion in much of the region, particularly in India and Indonesia, as well as China and a number of smaller countries. “China’s tape demand is expected to decelerate considerably from the nearly double-digit annual gains registered between 2005 and 2015, but it will still be among the world’s fastest growing tape mar- kets in 2020, and will remain by far the largest mar- ket,” said analyst Mike Richardson. Gains in Japan will remain slow due to market maturity, below average economic growth, and population decline. However, it will continue to be one of the world’s major tape markets, as well as a significant producer.
