It has been a busy few days for Corn- wall’s newest hockey team. On Thursday evening, an ownership group officially announced the city would get a team from a semi-pro Quebec senior hockey league – the Cornwall River Kings were introduced. The ownership group announced The River Kings would be coming to the Ed Lumley Arena this fall On Saturday, the River Kings communica- tion director Nicolas Pelletier announced the team had acquired Eric Meloche, a fan favourite with the Cornwall Colts who also did time in the big league with the Pitts- burgh Penguins. Then on Sunday morning, The Journal re- ceived a terse email from Pelletier indicating he will no longer be representing the River Kings and wishing “a good season to all.” So already, it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for the North American Hockey League team bought by local businessman Bernard Villeneuve, a partner in Villeneuve Tank Lines. The team and key members of the opera- tion were revealed at a press conference Thursday evening at the Cornwall Civic Complex, but only after a delay of about 30 minutes when league president Michel Godin got caught in traffic on his way from Quebec. And when Godin finally took the podium, his address was entirely in French, although Pelletier did offer a rough transla- tion afterwards. Among the announcements were that for- mer Cornwall Colts owner and coach Al Wagar will be the bench boss for the new team, and Sasha Popikuk, a 14th overall pick in the 2005 National Hockey League draft would be the team’s first pick in an up- coming draft. The team also unveiled the look of its new jersey, with colours harkening back to the city’s glory days of the Cornwall Royals and announced a contest to design a logo for the team.
