Life for Robert Edgar

Although Edgar cooperated with police early on during the investigation, he initially told police his wife had fallen down a flight of stairs while carrying a heavy box of books. However, autopsy reports painted a different story. Edgar called 911 on the morning of January 25 stating that his wife needed help. When officers arrived on the seen, Sekora was unresponsive, lying on her back at the base of the staircase. Officers observed inconsistencies in Edgar’s story noticing bruising on Edgar’s arm that resembled a handprint, as well as scratches on Edgar’s face. On January 26, a post-mortemexamination was performed, which suggested injuries to be consistent with someone who had been smothered. The cause of death was recorded as obstruction of airway. Sekora’s daughter, Tereza Sernets, read a heartfelt impact statement to the court explaining how difficult the ordeal has been for her and her family. She stated that she did not like Edgar from the beginning and suggested that he had harmed her at the beginning of the relationship. “It is incredibly difficult to describe how I feel,” said Sernets. “I suffer incredible heart-tearing pain.” Sernets said she had spoken to her mother every day, and now suffers from lack of trust, inability to sleep, and denial. “I came here today to face the reality that my mother was murdered.” Son of the accused, Nicolas Edgar also read an impact statement describing how difficult his stepmother’s death has been for himand his family. “She was a stepmother, but she was really amother to me,” he said. “I lost two parents. The pain has been unbearable.” Edgar’s granddaughter also had an impact statement, which was read silently by

the judge. Crown attorney Martel and defense lawyer Robert Miller both gave their recommendations as to Edgar’s fate, agreeing that life with ineligibility for parole for 10 years would be appropriate. Martel asked to have a DNA profile for Edgar, as well as a lifetime ban on firearms. Miller asked the judge to consider allowing Edgar to serve his sentence at LaMacaza Institution inQuebec, stating his client felt he could rehabilitate better there. Miller also explained that Edgar would like the opportunity to teach his trade as machinist during his incarceration.

After a 15-minute recess to decide, judge Pelletier came back with a decision. As he explained the reasoning for his decision, Pelletier agreed with the recommendation of council, sentencing Edgar to life in prison, with ineligibility for parole for 10 years. Pelletier also agreed to the DNA profile as well as the ban on firearms, and stated he would not object to Edgar serving his sentence in a different province. “The horror and the shock the victim must have experienced when she realized it was her dying day,” said Pelletier. “The procedure will end today, but it is far from a completed task for family members. It is very clear that the impact will never go away.”

Tereza Sernets is relieved Robert Edgar received a life sentence for the murder of her mother Zdenka (Radja) Sekora.
