Liberal budget in trouble:McDonell
Man charged with domestic sexual assault
McDonell is wary of the intentions of the Liberal government in its budget manoeu- vring. “Officially the budget is still on the table, we are just wondering when you stop debate because that limits the number of days you have to get it through.” He is also critical of the Liberals for failing to seek budget input from the Conservatives and New Democrats. “You even hear the NDP are saying there was no discussion with either party before the budget was brought down and if you are really looking for cooperation on getting a budget through, you think you would at least talk to at least one of the other parties.” Now have a budget that neither side agrees with. “Is that done on purpose? What’s (the government’s) intention?” Follow @gkielec on Twitter. For breaking news, go to www.editionap.ca and click on The Journal. Email greg.kielec@eap.on.ca

Local Conservative MPP Jim McDonell thinks the Ontario Liberal government’s budget may be on its last legs. “We think they will probably withdraw the budget and re-issue another one,” McDonell said after a budget discussion meeting with local leaders last week. “We’ll see because they stopped debate on it last week, which is not normal. And they only have 12 days to put it to a vote so they are losing time.” McDonell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas- South Glengarry, later said no debate had been yet initiated on budget brought down by the government on March 27. “It never really came to debate. They with- drew it and put other bills before it. We’re trying to figure out what their strategy is be- cause there really is no discussion on the issue.” The Liberal government is negotiating with the New Democratic Party to solidify the support needed to pass the budget. The Con- servatives have said they will vote against the document. McDonell met with representatives from industry, school boards, and the city of Cornwall. “Because we missed that round of budget talks that’s traditional in January and Febru- ary, as a party we are going out and talking to people who will have a part in providing jobs,” McDonell said. “We believe their input in crucial.” He said the meeting focused on”what they see are some of the needs as they go out and expand and hire people and some of the problems they may be having with the workforce.” “If this province is going to be successful, it’s all about providing good paying jobs and being competitive and being able to sell our products.” Jobs should have been the focus of the Lib- eral budget, instead there were plenty of promises to set up commissions, McDonell said. “But I don’t think we need another commission to look at job creation, we need action.” “We needed a jobs budget -- all we got was a commission they are going to set up a com- mission to look at jobs and productivity.”

The charge was laid after SD&G OPP of- ficers responded to a report of a domestic incident Saturday on Glen Roy Road in South Glengarry. According to police, the man sexually assaulted a woman after a verbal alterca- tion. He was arrested and faces charges of overcoming resistance to commit in- dictable offence and sexual assault. He was held in custody pending an ap- pearance in Cornwall court.
