A storage shed behind Hammond’s Rona store was engulfed in flames following what witnesses to the incident call a freak accident, on August 20. According to several witnesses, a dump truck was leaving the premises of the lot when it ripped off several power lines, which ended up falling on the shed. Le député libéral Francis Drouin a décla- ré que le candidat conservateur Pierre Lemieux a tort de laisser entendre que le gouvernement Trudeau n’a pas su défendre les intérêts du secteur agricole de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell (GPR). M. Lemieux a reproché au gouvernement Trudeau de ne pas avoir respecté sa promesse d’offrir un programme d’indemnisation aux producteurs de lait, d’oeufs et de poulet. Le candidat conservateur a fait remarquer que le programme était censé être en place en juin dernier, mais qu’il n’a pas encore été annoncé. « Je suis heureux de voir que M. Lemieux se préoccupe de cette question (d’indemnisation), a dit M. Drouin, car il y a quelques mois, son parti a voté contre ces mesures. » M. Drouin a expliqué que le gouvernement Trudeau a prévu un programme d’indemnisation de 350 millions de dollars pour les producteurs laitiers, qui a été réparti dans ses budgets de 2016, 2017 et 2018. GPR a reçu 5 millions de dollars, en vertu de cette compensation, pour les fermes laitières qui avaient des partenaires d’investissement impliqués. Québec environment ministry officials have confirmed that operations at a hydroelectric plant in Gatineau’s east end are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of fish which have washed up along the shores of the Ottawa River, as far at least as Rockland, during the past two months. The companies, which own and operate the plants, have been told to modify and monitor their procedures to prevent the situation from happening again. Rivers have surged over their banks this spring, flooding hundreds of homes, businesses and cottages. The Ottawa, Muskoka, French and Mattagami rivers (and many others) have flooded, and the risk now extends to lakes as well. “Forecast high winds […] will pose addi- tional flood hazards along the shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario due to high water, wind driven storm surge and damages due to erosive wave action,” read a late May warning from the province’s flood forecasting system. While provincial funding cuts for flood work have been imposed on Ontario Conser- vation Authorities, 14 of them have issued flood warnings. In the 1920s and 1930s, flooding was commonplace in Ontario. Edmund Zavitz, Chief Forester of Ontario a century ago, traced the problem to deforestation. Settlers had cleared most of southern and eastern Ontario, leaving a bare-bones forest cover of about nine per cent. The Thames and Ganaraska watersheds were down to about four per cent forest cover. The indiscriminate clearing had strip- ped away some of the key features that absorb rainfall surges, such as swamps and
wetlands along creeks. Deserts spread. Sand dunes engulfed orchards and roads. There was nothing to soak up the rain and flash floods multiplied. Zavitz offered a simple solution. Plant trees, he said. Tree roots hold back riverbanks and prevent erosion. Trees act as sponges, soaking up rainwater; the trees release water into the atmosphere through what’s called transpiration. This is a benefit of sufficient forest cover. Forests Ontario, the tree-planting and forest education charity, has planted large quantities of trees across the province in the past 12 years. Government support through the 50 Mil- lion Tree Program has kept down the price of trees, encouraging private landowners to turn fields into forests. These afforestation programs benefit us all, because they reduce the risk of floods and erosion. In its April budget, the government of Pre- mier Doug Ford cut the funding for Ontario’s 50 Million Tree Program.

La 4e Édition du Tournoi de Golf des Chevaliers de Colomb de Rockland a eu lieu le 8 juin dernier et a accueilli au-delà de 122 joueurs. « C’est grâce à la générosité des joueurs, des commanditaires et des bénévoles que nous avons pu briser le record de Collecte de Fonds par plus de 6,000 $ cette année, à souligné le président du tournoi, Albert Bourdeau. S P O R T S DAVIES WINS GOLD AND SILVER
On August 17, Rockland kayaker Benoit Davies came home from the Ontario Provincial Championships a champion, having won four gold medals and one silver medal. Davies raced against opponents he had not seen since this time last year, when he took part in the team competing at the 2018 Ontario Summer Games in London, Ontario. “I felt great about winning, it makes me grateful for my crewmates and my coaches,” said the 15-year-old. He will next face off against other kayakers from August 27 to September 1st, during the National Championships. “I am not overconfident or stressing about it,” he said about the upcoming competition. “I want to treat this as any other regatta and do the same preparation as I do for other races. I am looking forward to taking part in my first National Championships.” The boy’s parents have started a Go Fund Me page to raise funds for their son, as he continues his kayaking career that he hopes will take him to the Olympics. JEFFREY MICHAEL LAUGHREN JULY 21, 1983 JULY 23, 2019 It is with saddened hearts that we announce the sudden tragic death of our beloved, Jeff, on July 23, 2019. He was the loving and adoring father to his only daughter, Echo. He enjoyed playing with her and teaching her new things, but mostly he enjoyed sharing his passion for scrappen with her. Jeff was a very caring and energetic man with many talents and interests: scrapping, professional MMA fighting, practiced mixed martial arts, the tuba, the upright base, hockey, volunteering in and around the community where he lived in St. Isidore. But his greatest and most profound talent was his ability to touch the lives of everyone he met. “If you met Jeff, you never forgot him”, words that are frequently repeated. He was a man of trust, honour and respect. Jeff will be profoundly missed and forever loved and remembered by his father Michael (Debra O’Brien), his daughter Echo, two sisters Jennifer (Eric Mitchell) and Lisa (Scott Filoon), paternal grandmother Adrienne (Lapensee) Laughren, his girlfriend Rachel Duval, biological mother Joanne (Deslauriers) Bissonette, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and close friends too many to mention. A church service will be held at Presbytere Church in Grenville on August 23, 2019 at 12 p.m. Friends and family are Remerciements
De Hammond, ON, est décédée le dimanche 18 août 2019, à l’âge de 84 ans. Elle était l’épouse de feu Hubert Sabourin, la fille de feu Joseph Langevin et de feu Philomène Mainville. Elle laisse ses enfants: Richard (Louise), François (Réjeanne), Yves (Micheline), Liette (Sylvain) et Alain; ses 15 petits-enfants; 20 arrière- petits-enfants et une arrière-arrière-petite-fille. Elle laisse également son frère et ses soeurs: Cécile, Annette, Juliette, Claire et Alban ainsi que plusieurs beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, neveux, nièces et ami(e)s. Elle fut prédécédée par son fils, Robert, et par ses frères et ses soeurs Henri, Yvon, Louis, Bruno, Marie-Rose et Pauline. La famille désire remercier l’équipe du 5e étage de l’hôpital Montfort pour leurs excellents soins. Les funérailles seront célébrées à l’église St-Mathieu de Hammond, ON le samedi 7 septembre 2019, à 11h. La famille recevra les condoléances à l’église à compter de 10h.
