A LABOR OF LOVE This Is Farming

wines that balance power and ripeness with finesse and structure. Oak Knoll is also famous for its clay loam, a soil particularly well-suited to grape growing. When you have land this good, you have a responsibility to treat it right. Throughout the season, we carefully remove leaf covering and drop fruit. Dropping fruit is the process by which the less exceptional grapes are cut from the vine, leaving only the best to come to full ripeness. This ultimately lowers yields, but it allows the vine to focus on producing the best possible grapes at harvest. Dozens of little decisions like this result in a wine worth savoring. You can bet industrial wineries, who always keep an eye on the bottom line, aren’t dropping fruit. After all, more grapes means more wine. Our philosophy isn’t one of more being better, but rather one of putting the wine first. At every turn, we listen to our grapes and treat them with respect. We’re out in the vineyards multiple times per week, even every day during certain times of the year. We tend our vines by hand and never compromise in our farming practices. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding, and we want you to remember our pudding long after the last sip is gone.

As a consumer, it’s easy to forget that wine is an agricultural product because it’s been prized for millennia. However, when you are in the business of making wine, you are reminded nearly every day that you’re in the business of farming. Tending the vines with love and care isn’t always an easy task, but it’s one that never stops being rewarding. While I’m writing this article, we’re dealing with a late rainy season here in the Napa Valley. The rain itself isn’t cause for major concern, but, if we get hail in the first weeks after the buds break, berries can be stripped off the vines. Issues like these are a near- daily occurrence when you’re growing wine grapes. Making the highest quality wine starts with being in tune with your surroundings. Lucky for us, we are in a breathtakingly beautiful environment. Kelly Family Vineyards is located in the historic Oak Knoll District of the Napa Valley. The vineyards, which have been in our family since 2012, are on the western edge of the valley floor, providing consistent sun. We benefit from cool air from the mountains, which leads to large swings between daytime and nighttime temperatures. These variances, known as diurnal temperatures, allow us to produce

When you share a wine with somebody or give them a bottle as a gift, you want it to tell a story. Great wine tells the story of the land and the hands that made it. Our wines tell the story of our family, the Kelly Family, and our gorgeous land in Napa Valley. As a fellow Kelly, we want to give you the opportunity to share and take part in that story. Wouldn’t you want to hand your customers and colleagues a wine you can fully stand behind? Ours is a wine with meaning, and that meaning comes in part from our careful farming efforts. Go to KellyFamilyVineyards.com to get on our allocation list or to learn more about our story, our land, and our appreciation of Kellys nationwide.

Bordering Sweden and northern Finland, Norway can even be the beginning to a cool European tour this summer.

As the scorching summer sun beats down, it’s hard to remember that just six months ago you were shivering through the winter, whether that meant a chilly 50 degrees F or bitter subzero temperatures. But if cooler temps sound like paradise, and a dip in the pool is no longer keeping you cool, it might be time to take a vacation somewhere chilly. Check out these three destinations to avoid the summer heat. ALASKA No place says chilly quite like Alaska. Trips to Alaska can be expensive during this time of year, but when you step into that crisp air with a cool mountainous view, you’ll understand why it’s a popular summer voyage. exclusive club. Our wines wouldn’t exist without the involvement of every member of our household. We owe our ties to the wonderful land of the Napa Valley to Harold Kelly, who arrived to the area in 1968. Harold was an integral figure in Napa’s agricultural community. His love of the land and belief in responsible stewardship was passed onto his son Gene, the founder and proprietor of Kelly Family Vineyards. Gene, his wife, Paula, and his son, Jacob, are directly involved in every aspect of the process that results in a bottle of wine from Kelly Family Vineyards. Gene oversees what goes on in the vineyard and the cellar, ensuring only the highest quality wine ends up in the bottle. Paula manages the orders and workflow. If you’ve purchased a bottle

It’s not hard to find dozens of wineries with family names. Massive producers with hundreds of employees are often named for their original founder, even if that founder’s descendants have long since sold the winery. What’s rarer to come across is a family who actually works together to create the wine that bears their name. Kelly Family Vineyards is proud to be a member of that

During the summer, the backyard grill becomes the place to be. It’s the best site for sharing grilled meat and memories. But as you grill this summer, why not take a step out of your “meat comfort zone?” Whether you prefer gas or charcoal, just about any backyard grill can be transformed into an all-purpose, high-temperature oven. Get ready to kick some of your favorite foods up a notch! Here are three foods that are great for grilling. PIZZA Making your own pizza at home is incredibly easy. You can make your own dough or buy it at the grocery store. Roll it out, add all your favorite toppings, then toss it on the grill. Just make sure your pizza will fit on the grill first! You may need to make smaller personal pizzas if you have a smaller grill. Pro Tip: The hotter you can get your grill, the better. At 500– 600 degrees F, it may only take a few minutes to completely cook the pizza, so don’t leave the grill. This is the best time to use a pizza stone (if you have one) to ensure a golden- brown crust, but you can place the pizza directly on the grill. BREAD There’s nothing like making your own artisan bread at home, and you can do it right in the grill. You can create your own flatbread, rolls, or full loaves with just about any bread recipe. It all comes down to time and temperature control. 500 degrees F tends to be a safe bet. If it’s too hot, you’ll overbake the outside while the inside remains raw. SALSA You can kick up the flavor of any homemade salsa by first grilling each ingredient you want in your salsa, such as tomatoes, jalapeño, onion, or garlic. This includes salsa with fruit, such as mangoes or peaches. Allow each ingredient to get a light char, but be sure to remove the charred skin of the tomatoes after grilling. Leaving it on can result in a burnt flavor rather than a smoky one. No matter what you are grilling this summer, don’t forget to pair your meal with your favorite wine from Kelly Family Vineyards! WHY CERTA IN WINES COST MORE THAN OTHERS The Story Behind the Price of a Bottle For many people, shopping for a bottle of wine can feel like throwing a dart in the dark. As such, it’s completely fair to wonder why bottles vary so much in price. While you may not be able to tell by looking at the label, a whole host of factors determine cost. Here are a few of the major ones.

BRAND REPUTATION We’ll discuss this one first because it’s the most misunderstood. Yes, there are some powerful producers whose offerings generate demand based on prestige. However, they’re really only prevalent at the highest end of the market, where well-heeled collectors and investors shell out tens of thousands or more for a case. Branding has a minimal effect on the cost of the vast majority of wine. ARTISINAL VS. INDUSTRIAL Perhaps no single characteristic is more determinant of price than whether the wine is made industrially or artisanally. Almost any wine you can find at a grocery store for under $25 is going to be an industrial product with

grapes sourced from all over the map, yielded by machine in the vineyard, and mingled with tons of additives in the cellar. A more agricultural approach means lower yields and harder work, but it leads to a better wine. Kelly Family Vineyards takes the artisanal approach. Among growing the grapes, fermenting for 18 months in a barrel, and aging for one year in the bottle, we need four years before our small batch of 400 cases is perfected for release. SITE SPECIFICITY One of the qualities that makes wine so special is its ability to reflect where it comes from. Chardonnay from Napa doesn’t taste

the same as Chablis, even though it is the same grape. With wines that simply come from California or New Zealand, you don’t get any specificity in the taste. Our wines come from the Oak Knoll District of the Napa Valley, one of the most historic wine- growing areas in the world. Believe us, it makes a big difference. Want to experience how these decisions affect the price and quality of wine? We encourage you to compare a wine from Kelly Family Vineyards to an industrially produced megamart brand. Visit KellyFamilyVineyards.com to get on our allocation list and put our wine to the test.
