Dear Friends, This year commemorates the Holiday Faire 40th Anniversary! What began as the “Holiday Stocking Bazaar” has since grown exponentially, moving from the Irvine Fine Arts Center to the Great Park Palm Court Arts Complex to host more artists than ever before. Don’t miss the festivities Saturday, November 5, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. With new exhibitions citywide, make plans to view art throughout the many exhibition facilities in Irvine. Art at City Hall presents Chloe Jeongmyo Kim: Transplanted Panorama , on view through November 18. The exhibition features works by Korean-born, Irvine-based artist Chloe Kim, who utilizes abstract painting, photography, and sculpture to express her personal experiences of American life. Then, on December 9, Art at City Hall will feature Old Town Irvine and the Photography of Rene Larson in collaboration with the Irvine Historical Society, showcasing photographs of the City’s beginnings. At the Great Park Gallery, view Beyond the Decorative through December 31, an exhibition that explores how decorative motifs and processes express ideas relating to personal identity and experiences. Last but not least, the Irvine Fine Arts Center galleries will open two new exhibitions that explore the transformative potential of images and storytelling respectively in In This World and Infinite Timeline . Please join us for an opening reception Saturday, November 19, 2–4 p.m. Before you are busy with the demands of the season, check out our new programs. Learn how to record memories from your travels in a sketchbook using pencil, ink, and watercolor pencils that can be used both dry and wet. Or, take part in a hands-on introduction to tintype printing using a Holga camera to create small square images. Flip to Page 12 to learn more and mark your calendar for fall registration, which begins August 15 at yourirvine.org . Your teens can cook up new skills by exploring fun recipes and cooking techniques in Culinary Workshops this fall. Recipes include pad thai, beef roast, foccacia and pasta, and more. See Pages 10–11 to learn about upcoming culinary classes.

Creatively yours,

EXHIBITIONS

Christine Atkinson, Michael Chesler, Lucy Wood Baird, C. Matthew Luther, Katie Shapiro, and Karley Sullivan: In This World Irvine Fine Arts Center Main Gallery Opening Reception: November 19, 2–4 p.m. Exhibition: November 12–February 11 Moving through the world with pocket-sized time machines, modern humans exponentially create, share, manipulate, and duplicate images imbued with the spirit of their space and time. Despite the pervasiveness of images and image-making devices in contemporary life, the alchemic potential of both remains a wellspring of possibility to reimagine the world, or draw us into its lesser explored corners. The artists whose works feature in In This World transform — conceptually and materially — subjects anchored in the everyday into thoughtful, speculative, and imaginative encounters that invigorate the act of viewing with curiosity and sentiment.

Regina Herod, The Burden of Divine Revelation , 2021, paper, plaster, found object, pigmented wax, glass, nails, wire, 23 x 21 x 13 in.

EXHIBITIONS

Regina Herod and Alexandra Wiesenfeld: Infinite Timeline Irvine Fine Arts Center Gallery 1 Opening Reception: November 19, 2–4 p.m. Exhibition: November 12–February 11 Infinite Timeline features sculptural works by Regina Herod and paintings by Alexandra Wiesenfeld that explore the mutability of history and storytelling as they relate to themes of nature, reason, and empire. In their approach to producing works featured in the exhibition, each artist employed repurposed materials such as wax, wood, metal, paper, or plastic as a means to draw to mind the cyclical generation of new life from the detritus of history. Herod and Wiesenfeld’s works share a deep consideration of the forces that define our general understanding of the past and a critical attention to the conditions that shape the future.
