MAKE GOALS THAT STAND THE TEST OF TIME H ave you ever set a goal only to find yourself looking in the mirror and asking yourself why you still haven’t gotten where you wanted to go? Here’s an example of something I’m going for: My lifetime vision for my health is to have the flexible body of a Greek god. Now don’t laugh at me there. I don’t know where I came up with those words, but when I write that down and read it, those words create a clear picture in my mind of exactly where I want to end up and charge me up to want to get there.

Write it Down

need to have. So, given your 90-day vision, what habit, project, or conversation do you need to have so you can get to that vision?

So for example, my lifetime vision for my health is to have the flexible body of a Greek god.

Let’s be real: creating real, lasting, transformational change in your life is hard work. But in this article, I’m going to share some shortcuts I’ve learned over the years that have helped me create and sustain meaningful change in my life. Step No. 1: Write down your lifetime vision for your bigger future. With any goal, you need a road map for actually getting where you want to go. It’s one of the reasons you so often fail to get the result you’re looking for. I learned this at a very young age. Around the time I was 13, my dad introduced me to Zig Ziglar’s goal-setting tools. I instantly loved the whole process of thinking through what I wanted and how I was going to get there, then breaking that down into the smaller steps I needed to take action and actually reach my goals. Here’s what to do. Start with the following areas of your life: God, your spouse, your kids, your health, your friends, and how you’re going to use your unique talents to make sure the world is a better place because you were here. Now, envision what it looks like in all those areas if you achieved everything you wanted to. There are two rules here: 1) think big and 2) don’t limit yourself! Now, write that down in a manner as vividly and emotively as you possibly can. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just get it written. Congratulations! Now you have a lifetime vision! There’s so much power just completing that one step. You’ve just obtained clarity for yourself and subconsciously told your brain the things it should and should not be looking for — I could go on and on.

My 90-day vision for my health is to make flexibility training an integrated part of my fitness routine. I’ve decided the action that’s going to get me to that 90-day vision is that I need to start the habit of doing yoga once a week, every week. Step No. 4: Take action . Now you know what to do … you just have to do it! One way to jump start your activity is to share your vision with someone else. The mere act of sharing your goals with someone else will create powerful internal motivation for you, because you’re not going to want to tell someone, “Hey, I’m going to accomplish X,” and then have them see you not get there. Something else you can do is find a friend who has a similar goal and work towards accomplishing your goals together. Step No. 5: Repeat steps No. 1 through No. 4 every quarter . You need to go back every quarter and walk through those four steps. The reason is that your lifetime vision will likely change a little over time because 1) you will change and 2) because life will throw curveballs at you. If your lifetime vision changes, then your 90-day vision and actions will need to change too. You’ve got to keep it fresh, so it’s really where you want to go and you’re motivated to get there. -David W. Shepherd , Jr.

Now you need to break that vision down into smaller, actionable steps. Step No. 2: Break down that lifetime vision into a 90-day vision. Now that you have a clear lifetime vision, envision where you need to be in 90 days to move you closer to that lifetime vision in each of those key areas in your life. Now write that down. Continuing with my example, my lifetime vision for my health is to have the flexible body of a Greek god. Am I going to be able to accomplish that in the next 90 days? Probably not. So where do I want to go in the next 90 days that will get me closer to that lifetime vision? So my 90-day vision for my health is to make flexibility training an integrated part of my fitness routine. I’ve gotten much stronger over the last two years of lifting heavy weights, but I’ve also sacrificed a lot of flexibility for that strength. So, I need to work on my flexibility to get closer to that lifetime vision. Step No. 3: Clearly define the action you need to take during the next 90 days. It’s great to have a vision, but you’re not going to get there unless you put in the work. This is where you define action you need to take over the next 90 days to get where you want to be. For each key area of your life, this could be a habit you need to change or start, a project you need to complete, or maybe a conversation you

Last month, we gathered for our annual holiday party at The Mountain Oyster Club. It was a joy to see you. Holidays are about bringing good people together, and we couldn’t have asked for a better group of people. One of our guests traveled all the way from California to join us, and we’re so glad you made the trip! We hope you enjoyed the night as much as we did. The evening was full of socializing and holiday cheer. Some people met for the very first time, and I heard several mention that it felt like they’d known each other for a long time. How wonderful! Two of our guests were happy to find out they were neighbors and would be able to continue their friendship. Another guest mentioned how much they enjoyed seeing people they’d met last year. I couldn’t agree more. The air was filled with warm, friendly conversation and lots of laughter. After coordinating many of the details, it made my day to hear how much you appreciated the decorations. I loved seeing everyone in their sparkling Christmas attire, and it was such a nice group of people. The food was delicious, too. Salmon, roasted Angus beef, and, of course, mountain oysters! It was very festive. We always have fun, don’t we? Thank you for joining us. We can’t wait to do it again next year! E V E N T H I G H L I G H T CELEBRATE THE GOOD TIMES

IS YOUR LIFESTYLE RETIREMENT READY? As you approach retirement, it’s important to make sure your lifestyle is tailored to fit the end of your working life. This concept, known as “rightsizing,” can make your savings last longer, which provides you with the freedom to enjoy your later years. Kathy Gottberg, author of “Rightsizing: A Smart Living 365 Guide to Reinventing Retirement,” defines the concept as “conscious choices for a better lifestyle that more closely fits your new needs in retirement.” The earlier you can begin rightsizing, the more prepared you’ll be for the days when you no longer have an income from work. For most of us, what really matters when we retire is spending time with loved ones and having memorable experiences. Nobody’s greatest regret is not having enough stuff. With that in mind, here are a few tips that will prepare you for a fruitful and fulfilling retirement. Clear Out Unneeded Goods If you’ve been in the same home for years or decades, you probably have more stuff than you need. Start by discarding anything that’s broken, damaged, or simply not getting any use. You should also make sure you’re not acting as a storage unit for friends or family members. If they don’t have the space for something, it shouldn’t be your job to hang on to it. Eliminating clutter will free up your space and allow you to treasure what you have. Move Into a House You Can Fill Once all of your children have left the nest, you’ll often find that you don’t need as many rooms. Selling your home and moving into one that isn’t half- empty will generate some extra cash and help you to live more efficiently. As an added bonus, you’ll often find that a cozier home increases happiness. The less time you have to spend on home maintenance, the more you can devote to the activities you love. Change Your Mindset Too often, we suffer from the urge to “keep up with the Joneses.” If our neighbor buys something, we want it too. But to really rightsize, you should resist the urge to meet other people’s standards. Retirement should help you make the most of your life, not anyone else’s. Before you make a purchase, especially a large one, ask yourself what’s motivating your decision. If it’s not going to make your life better, leave it on the shelf.

THE FOUR SEASONS OF THE ECONOMY WINTER IS COMING

Spring is a beautiful time — everyone comes out of hibernation, everything is in bloom, days get longer, and the weather gets warmer. Just like we have seasons in nature, the economy and market go through seasons. It’s been an unusual spring and summer for the economy. We’ve been in this season since 2008, when the Fed printed more money to keep interest rates low. Usually, the economy goes in cycles like the seasons. Some are longer than others, but typically, we experience spring when the economy and markets are in bloom, then summer when things start to mature, grow, and reach their full potential. Fall follows, and it’s a season of change. Like it is for farmers, fall is harvest time. You want to be aware when you’re in the fall season and when it’s time to make a shift with your crops. Like a farmer, if you don't harvest in the fall, your crops could be lost. TAKE A BREAK!

Then winter comes. Winter is painfully cold and uncomfortable, and we haven't experienced one in the economy in about nine years. What does coming, and you need to be prepared. Nine years is a long time to go without winter, and you need to protect yourself for when the blizzard hits. That’s what we do for you. We’ve got your back. We’re here watching your crops every day, tending to them so you will be ready when fall turns to winter. that mean for you? It means winter is
