“magnify,” and this is just what David does all through the twenty-one verses. Interesting it is. to note the different at tributes and powers which he ascribes to God. “ Great is the Lord.” “ The Lord is gracious.” “ The Lord is good to all.” “ The Lord upholdeth all that fall.” “ The Lord is righteous in all his ways.” “The Lord is nigh unto all that call upon him.” “The Lord preserveth all them that love him.” The psalm ends as it began, with as criptions o f praise, asking that “all flesh bless his holy name for ever and for ever.” ------- jjgg— Discussion Material I. S c r ip t u r e V e r se s o n T h a n k s g iv in g “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psa. 34:1). “Thou crownest the year with thy good ness” (Psa. 65:11). “ Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psa. 107:8). “ Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord” (Psa. 150:6). “ O come, let us sing unto the L ord : let us make a joyful noise to the rock o f our salvation” (Psa. 95:1). “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thank ful unto him, and bless his name” (Psa. 100:4). “ O praise the Lord, all ye nations; praise him, all ye people” (Psa. 117:1). II. W i t h T h a n k s g iv in g “In nothing be anxious, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving" has been called an impos sible command, and it is to the natural man. But when Christ enters into our lives and takes control, it is no longer “ I, but Christ who liveth in me.” The little phrase, “with thanksgiving,” is the keynote to the situation. If we can be thankful at all times, there can be no anxiety. Prayer and praise have been call ed twin keys that unlock God’s treasure chest. They unlocked the prison door in Philippi when Paul and Silas sang praises to God. Thanksgiving is thanksliving. NOVEMBER 27, 1932 TO W H A T EXTENT IS OUR CHURCH THE RESULT OF MISSIONARY EFFORT? 1 C o r in t h ia n s 4:6-16 Suggestions for the Meeting Hymn— “Jesus Shall Reign.” Hymn— “W e’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations.” Prayer. Quartet Number— “ Open My Eyes.” Leader’s Message. Address by a Missionary. Quiet Hour. Closing Hymn—“ Let the Lower Lights be Burning.” BenedictionSgActs 1 :8. I f a missionary speaker cannot be se cured, the daily topics for this week may be profitably used. They are rich in history and in suggestion. Choose three boys and three girls, and assign the topics to them two weeks in advance, so that they will have time for preparation. By so doing, you will have presented six pictures o f the early church, giving a well-defined concep tion o f the importance o f pioneer home missionary effort. You will also become acquainted with Peter, Philip, Paul, and

Silas, all pioneers in establishing the Chris tian church. ------------- ' Illustrations I. S m a l l B e g in n in g s Many large churches were once mission Sunday-schools. Recognizing this fact, the American Sunday School Union always be gins its work by organizing a Sunday- school. As the community grows, the school develops into a church. America owes a debt o f gratitude to the home mis sionaries, who, like Philip and Peter and Paul, were willing to go to places where Christ had not been made known. Re call the prophet’s words, “Who hath de spised the day o f small things?” II. B u il d in g C h u r c h e s o n t h e R io G r a n d e In southwestern Texas, along the Rio Grande River, land which had never pro duced anything except mesquite bushes and sage brush could have been bought by the county at one dollar per acre. At length, came irrigation, and the same land sold readily at from $100 to $200 per acre. Then followed railroads and prosperous towns. One young seminary student heard the call o f God for this region and answered, “ Here am I ; send me.” In an incredibly short time, he had organized and built churches at six different places and also some mission chapels for Mexicans in the same region.— M o r r is . Discussion Material I. T h e C h u r c h i n J e r u s a l e m A cts 2:42-47 Luke here enumerates four things which characterized the church at Jerusalem. These four salient factors should be mani fested in every church: 1. Continuance “in the apostles’ doctrine” — loyalty to God’s W ord in the Old Testament and to the belief in Jesus Christ as the Messiah who died and rose again. 2. “Fellowship”—community of disposi tion and oneness o f heart manifested in outward association. 3. “ Breaking o f bread”—the observance o f the Lord’s Supper. | 4. “ Prayers”— the vital- breath of the in fant church and o f every church. Because these conditions prevailed, no wonder believers were found “praising God and having favour with all the people” (v. 47). II. T h e C h u r c h i n S a m a r ia A cts 8 :4-8 Jerusalem had just expelled the disciples. Now despised Samaria is to have her op portunity. Jesus had told His disciples to be witnesses unto Him “in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part o f the earth.” Up to this time, they had gone no farther than Jeru salem. Philip, the deacon who became the evangelist, “ went down to the city o f Sa maria and preached Christ unto them.” Samaria was a hotbed of anti-Jewish an imosity, where ordinarily the Jews had no dealings. But Philip was full of faith and o f the Holy Spirit, and he had the one mes sage o f importance— Christ. So “there was great joy in that city.” He preached Christ —not reform, nor education, nor science, nor social service, nor uplift work, but Christ—“ the one altogether lovely.” What a different world we would have now if it were true o f Christians that they went down into the city of So-and-So and pro claimed Christ! Alas, too many leave Him behind when they go.
