“ Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself.” (Matt. 16:24). Self is the anagram o f flesh. The flesh- principle is the self-principle, which so in sidiously creeps into everything from which it is not rigorously excluded by the grace o f God. Before we are converted, self is the sole motive-power o f our lives: our kindest and best actions originate in this root. And after we are converted, it strives to insinuate itself into our religious life. Satan will not prohibit us from being religious—if only “ self” is the mainspring of our devotion. Hence it is that Jesus Christ is so unrelenting in His demand for self-denial. And it has been the axiom of saintship in all ages—“Wheresoever thou findest thyself, deny thyself.” Sword in hand, we must pursue this evil thing—this self-hood—through all the disguises be neath which it hides itself. W e must allow it no quarter. W e must believe that it is never more near or more dangerous than when it causes a rumor to be set on foot that it is no more. In the self-congratu lation which arises on the receipt of this happy intelligence, there is a new and strik ing evidence o f its continued and vigorous existence. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (Phil. 2:13). “I delight to do thy will” (Psa. 40:8). Surely feeling is too unsatisfactory for any of us to build upon it for peace or power. Choose rather the shifting quick sands as a foundation for your house! We need something more reliable than an ex perience—which may be disturbed by an east wind, a cloudy day, or a fit of indi gestion. The true basis of religion is in rightwill- ing. And the reason for this is clear. W e are not what we know. W e are not what, in some special moment, we feel. W e are what we will. W e must bore down be neath the alluvial deposits o f emotion, and the formation of the intellect, to the gran ite o f the will 1 There, and there only, can we find a stable basis on which to build the structure o f a blessed or useful life; 'because the will is the true expression of Ourselves. NOVEMBER 10 P rovision in A dvance “ Thou preparest a table before me” (Psa. 23:5). Can we ever forget that episode—among the most charming incidents in the forty days —in which, as the weary fishers emerged from empty boats from a long, toilsome night, they found a banquet spread for them, by the tender thoughtfulness of their Lord, upon the strand of the lake? As soon as they touched land, they saw a fire o f coals, and fish laid thereon and bread. And is not this an emblem o f our Lord’s perpetual treatment o f His children? Tired, disappointed with fruitless toils, agitated by conflicted hopes and fears, we often pull to the shore trodden by His blessed feet ; nor do we ever approach Him without finding that He has anticipated our spiritual requirements, and that “his NOVEMBER 9 A ffecting the W ill

NOVEMBER 11 L ove C an A fford to W ait “ We know that all things work together for good" (Rom . 8 :28). It is not given to all men to look behind the phenomena of daily life, and to see into the methods and purposes o f God. This is the prerogative o f those who love. Love has an instinctive apprehension o f secrets, too deep for words to convey. Love can af ford to wait the unfolding o f those deep est thoughts, which eye hath not seen nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived. Disastrous indeed, and adverse, does God’s providence sometimes seem. Stroke on stroke! Blow on blow 1 Tidings on tidings o f dismay! | . . Can all this be for good? What good can such things bring? Then faith comes to the aid o f love, and reasons o f God’s love and faithfulness. He gave His S on ; can He withhold any good thing? He is g ood ; can He give aught but good and perfect gifts ? He loves; can He permit any hurt to come to those who are dear to Him as the blood o f Calvary? NOVEMBER 12 W hat F aith D oes “Now faith is the evidence of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1). Faith, when in proper exercise, does two things. First, it reckons that a position be longs to it, which we do not feel, but which it dares to claim on the warrant o f God’s Word. Second, it lays hold on the power of God to make that position a reality in daily and hourly experience. Constantly it lays hold on the mighty power of God, the power that raised Jesus from the grave o f Joseph, to set Him at the right hand of the Majesty in the heavens. And in the might of that power it walks across the unstable wave, and holds its position against all the assaults o f hell. It is impossible to live the ascension or heavenly life without as cension and divine power, and that is with in the reach o f an appropriating faith (Eph. 1:19). NOVEMBER 13 V ictory in C hrist J esus “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13). Redemption waits our appropriation, as the flowers o f spring await the hand of the flower girl; or as the deliverance wrought for the Jews by Mordecai awaited their personal action, which made it their own. From this moment, give up your strivings and endeavors, and take Christ as your de liverance from all the sins which have broken your peace and cursed your joy. When the oppressor approaches you, when the old habit seeks to assert itself, when easily besetting sin begins to weave its snare about you, or suddenly to assail— then look up to the Saviour, and say, “ I ap propriate Thee as my redemption in this my hour o f need!”
