APEGA 2020 Annual Report

VOLUNTEERS Engineering and geoscience regulation in Alberta would not be possible without APEGA’s greatest strength: our volunteers.

APEGA was founded by far-sighted volunteers who were dedicated to public safety. Over the past 100 years, thousands of APEGA volunteers have carried on that legacy, performing many vital roles. APEGA’s work—from essential regulatory functions to community outreach—could not be done without their drive and shared commitment to professionalism. To boost volunteer engagement, we launched Better Impact, our new volunteer-management system. Volunteers now have access to a central dashboard where they can: • log their hours online • see their schedule • search for new volunteer opportunities suited to their skills and experiences This new system provides us with instant and accurate snapshots of volunteer information, ensuring we have the volunteers we need for our required statutory functions. Its qualification- tracking tool is crucial for succession planning, allowing us to see when a volunteer’s term is expiring and what skills we’ll need to replace to keep our boards and committees healthy and operational.

APEGA volunteers gave back to their professions in many ways, including: • sharing their expertise on boards and committees

• reviewing membership applications

• writing questions for our licensing exam • inspiring future professionals through K-12 outreach • providing career advice to university students • guiding fellow professionals as mentors • raising the profile of professional engineers and geoscientists in their communities

Thank you, volunteers! APEGA volunteers remained as committed as ever through the public health crisis. During an uncertain time, you rose to the challenge. You stayed the course. You took on new roles. You continued to give your time and expertise to protect the public and strengthen our professions. We thank you for your continued involvement, contributions, and support.
