Getting to the Heart of Parenting Study Guide

Session 8 Applying Foundations to Children 6-12 Years, Part II

FOR GROUP PARTICIPATION These elements of the study are best used with others in a group setting.

And God Said… Read aloud Proverbs 27:5-6 . What is the Point? Read these statements aloud and keep them in mind during the video (5 minutes)

• Parents must be prepared to use “God-given moments” to instruct children in godly character. • Parents can evaluate their children’s heart growth by assessing their behavior in relationships. • Parents must recognize their own bad behavior before addressing their children’s errors. Petition Pray this together aloud. C aring Father, who search our innermost being to correct us toward the good way, give us as parents to rightly assess our own hearts, and to improve our character accordingly, so that we may serve as proper assessors and instructors of our children’s character, for your glory, through your grace in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Hear the Word 1. While it is generally most effective to train children intentionally with advance planning, parents should also “grab those God-given moments to instruct,” moments when your children slip in a meaningful way. What specific resources and practices should you be routinely using to prepare you in advance of these moments? 2. Part of being prepared is familiarity with the “character training tools” at your disposal. Rebuke is “comparison to a standard.” What is the ultimate standard which we should hold up in front of our children? Why are such relative standards as “When I was a kid…” and “The other students don’t…” largely unhelpful in developing objectively good character? 3. Read aloud Proverbs 27:5-6 : how is open rebuke better than hidden love? Do you rebuke your children? If not, why not? Watch the video. (28 minutes) Let's Talk About That Discuss these questions. (35 minutes)

4. Correction is another tool in the box. What is the difference between rebuke and correction ?
