Session 10 Applying Foundations to Children 13-18 Years, Part II
FOR GROUP PARTICIPATION These elements of the study are best used with others in a group setting.
And God Said… Read aloud Hebrews 4:14-16 . What is the Point?
Read these statements aloud and keep them in mind during the video (5 minutes) • Parents must be knowledgeable of issues that teens typically struggle with. • Teens tend to lack heart-awareness—they are not only blind, they are blind to their blindness. • Do not be overwhelmed nor give in to regret: the God of strength and grace is with you. Petition Pray this together aloud. H eavenly Father, merciful and gracious, we gratefully receive your forgiveness for all that we have failed to do as parents, and we thank you for supplying the wisdom and strength now to go properly forward in training our children, knowing that you love them infinitely more than we, through Christ, their Savior and ours. Amen. Hear the Word 1. Regarding issues teens typically struggle with, we considered last week their lack of desire for wisdom and correction. Teens also have a tendency toward legalism: they are oriented toward the definition of boundaries, and they debate vocabulary. What are some contemporary matters about which teens debate boundaries with parents? How does the father in Proverbs refute the false idea that what lies outside the circle of God’s safety is more desirable that what lies within it? Discuss other practical ways parents can correct that mistaken and dangerous idea. 2. Teens tend to be unwise in their choice of companions . Why will simply forbidding bad associations fail to correct the problem? (Hint: remember apple-nailing.) Read aloud Proverbs 13:20 . Discuss some real-life instances, involving famous people or personal acquaintances (or perhaps, yourself), that will illustrate for your children the great harm of alliance with dubious characters—“fools” in Solomon’s straightforward language. But just as importantly, discuss examples of how walking with the wise has helped other people to prosper. Watch the video. (30 minutes) Let's Talk About That Discuss these questions. (35 minutes)
